Area departments participating in National Prescription Drug Take Back

Image-13For the fifth year in a row, the Kennett Square Police Department will join other area departments in partnering with the U.S. Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Administration for the next National Prescription Drug Take Back on Saturday, April 26.

The event will be held at the police station – 115 N. Broad St., Kennett Square, 19348 – from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., a police department news release said.   Although the Kennett Square Police Department is a permanent disposal site for unwanted, unused, or expired prescription medications from homes, a service that is available to the public daily, the National Prescription Drug Take Back event helps raise awareness and serves as a reminder of the importance of safely disposing of unwanted medication, Police Chief Edward A. Zunino said.

New Garden Township Police Chief Gerald R. Simpson expressed a similar sentiment. New Garden Township has a permanent disposal box in the lobby of the police station; however, officers will still be stationed on Saturday at the Giant supermarket, 350 Scarlett Rd., Kennett Square, in the New Garden Shopping Center. “The New Garden Police Department is committed to this worthy program which enables the proper disposal of prescription  drugs, thus keeping these drugs out of our community,” Simpson said.

Prescription drug abuse in the U.S. is the fastest growing public health threat facing the nation, and the source of much of those controlled substances abused – especially by young people – continues to be family medicine cabinets, the release said.
