Greenwood Elementary’s ‘Ready for Reading’ singer/song-writer event

KENNETT – Beautifully arranged choral performances, Kennett High’s pottery sale and Greenwood Elementary’s 8th annual author, singer-songwriter event are just a sampling of what’s been happening this holiday season to foster a love for music, creativity and passion for learning throughout the Kennett Consolidated School District (KCSD).

More than 130 first graders at Greenwood Elementary have been working diligently, for weeks, on their ‘Ready for Reading’ presentation that included songs, hand-made props and studying in-depth facts about popular children’s authors: Jan Brett, Lois Ehlert, Laura Numeroff, Eric Carle, Kevin Henkes, and Leo Lionni.

The students’ hard-work culminated with a live performance for parents, grandparents, siblings and friends Friday featuring a morning of music and literary knowledge presented by each of the six first grade classrooms. Area singer-songwriter, Rick Waterhouse, has been working with each first grade class to help develop customized songs incorporating what the students love, and have learned, about these popular authors in preparation for the show.

The Ready for Reading program is funded by the Greenwood PTO’s hands-on learning program. “Kids just LOVE it,” says first grade teacher, Lisa English, “they have been SO excited…it’s always a great way to channel their energy this time of year.” Throughout the District, PTO partnerships help provide the ‘extras’ that help enhance the educational experience for both the students and faculty.

At Kennett High School, students’ talent and creativity was featured during its annual pottery sale this week.

Proceeds from the sale were re-invested into the pottery program and its continued need for supplies. The event is a win-win; with prices from $5-$30, not only does it help fund the program and showcase talented young artists; but it is also a great opportunity for the community to purchase beautiful hand-made pottery at reasonable prices.

KCSD faculty has been spotted having a bit of fun this week, too. Creative holiday-themed outfits, spirited accessories and even a KMS Santa sighting Thursday night have helped add a dose of fun (and some good laughs) to the final days prior to winter break.
