KENNETT SQUARE —

The St. Patrick’s Boys’ CYO basketball team is undefeated in 2016-17.

The St. Patrick’s boys’ varsity CYO basketball team has had quite a remarkable season – one for the record books. St. Patrick Church in Kennett Square participates in CYO (Catholic Youth Organization) sports. St. Patrick’s CYO, headed by Athletic Director Bill Dobbins, is one of thirteen teams in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia CYO Region 17 league. This season, the St. Patrick’s boys’ varsity team, consisting of seventh and eighth grade players from both Kennett Middle School and Patton Middle School, have gone undefeated under head coach, Andrew Hertz.

During the regular season and through CYO tournaments, the St. Patrick’s varsity team went 14-0 as they faced the other Region 17 CYO teams across Southern Chester and Delaware Counties. At the beginning of this month, in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia Region 17 playoffs, St. Patrick defeated three competitive teams – St. Agnes (West Chester) in the quarterfinals, St. Patrick (Malvern) in the semifinals, and St. Joseph (Downingtown) in the finals. They finished their regional competition at 17-0.

This past weekend, the St. Patrick varsity team started in the next level of competition – the Archdiocese of Philadelphia CYO tournament playoffs – competing with the top 32 teams in the Archdiocese. In the first two games, they defeated Visitation BVM (Norristown) and St. Alphonsus (Maple Glen). With a current 19-0 record, they will be looking to continue their winning streak and to represent Region 17 in this Archdiocesan youth ministry program. Only eight teams remain in the competition. On Saturday, February 18, 2017, St. Patrick will play Mary, Mother of the Redeemer (North Wales) in the quarterfinals. The game starts at 3:30pm at Bonner Prendergast High School in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania.
