EAST MARLBOROUGH — In the wake of Hurricane Harvey, a Chester County School District is reaching out to a sister district in the Beaumont, Texas area that saw its middle school largely destroyed by flooding in the aftermath of the storm.

The Unionville-Chadds Ford School District is adopting the Hardin-Jefferson Independent School District in Sour Lake, Texas, according to Unionville High School Principal Jimmy Conley.

“The Sour Lake Community was hit extremely hard by Hurricane Harvey,” Conley wrote in an email to the greater school community. “We will have a series of fundraising opportunities for our community, throughout the school year, in order to provide our extended family in Sour Lake with whatever support that they will need. The upcoming months will be difficult for the Sour Lake community, but I know that the kindness and generosity of our UCFSD families will be felt by the Hardin-Jefferson families.”

The first such event will be Friday night, when Unionville hosts Avon Grove in football. Avon Grove has a direct connection with the HJISD: the Hemmert Family, who were long-time Avon Grove residents, now live there.

There will be a collection table near the ticket booth for the 7 p.m. game. At this time, donations are asked to be in cash or gift cards frm the following outlets: Lowe’s, Home Depot, Target, Wal-Mart, Bed Bath and Beyond, Ace Hardware, JC Penney, or Amazon.

Additional events will be announced later this year.
