New Garden Township Police charged Guadalupe Tapia, 42, of Avondale, with drunken driving,  resisting arrest, and assaulting a police officer.

A 42-year-old Avondale man suspected of drunken driving is behind bars after resisting arrest, New Garden Township Police said.

Police investigating an accident on Dec. 27 at 6:51 p.m. at the intersection of Limestone Road and Southwood Road said the fire police monitoring traffic at the scene said a driver who appeared disoriented attempted to maneuver around them. Upon completing the accident investigation, a police officer contacted the driver, Guadalupe Tapia, who exhibited strong signs of intoxication, police said.

Tapia, who was taken into custody for suspected driving under the influence, became belligerent and extremely uncooperative, grabbing a police officer’s shirt and pushing and shoving the officer, police said. A brief struggle, during  which Tapia sustained a minor lip laceration, ensued before Tapia was restrained, police said. Tapia was arraigned on charges of drunken-driving, resisting arrest, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, disorderly conduct and harassment, police said.  He was remanded to Chester Prison after failing to post $2,000 cash bail, police said.

On Dec. 24, at 12:12 a.m., New Garden Township Police said they were dispatched to the 300 block of Scarlett Road for a well-being check of a subject in a parking lot.  Upon arrival contact, an officer made contact with John Carey, 60, formerly of Avondale, who was lying in the parking lot and who appeared to be intoxicated.  Carey, who was cleared by medical personnel, was taken into custody without incident and cited for public drunkenness, police said.

Responding to the 300 block of Scarlett Road for the report of an intoxicated subject creating a disturbance at a business, New Garden officers made contact with Eric Maucher, 25, of Landenberg on Dec. 26 at 8:30 p.m., police said. Maucher, who was bleeding from several facial abrasions, showed multiple signs of intoxication, became belligerent, and refused medical treatment transport for his injuries, police said.  Maucher was taken into custody and released pending a summons for disorderly conduct and public drunkenness, police said.
