New Garden Township Police say 70-year-old driver was intoxicated

IMG_0295On Tuesday, Jan. 7, at 5:16 p.m., New Garden Township officers responded to the 9100 block of Gap Newport Pike to check on the well-being of an elderly male, whose vehicle had broken down along the side of the road, police said.  Upon arrival, the driver, Jesus Perez, 70, of Landenberg, appeared confused and his speech was slurred when explaining his situation; an odor of an alcoholic beverage was detected on his breath, and an open, almost empty, bottle of liquor was observed on the passenger seat, police said.

Perez failed field sobriety tests, and a portable breath test indicated the presence of alcohol, police said.  Perez was taken into custody for suspected drunken driving and failed a chemical breath test as well, police said, adding that he was processed and released pending an appearance in district court.

On Tuesday, Jan. 7, at 9:06 p.m., a New Garden officer observed a vehicle drive into an embankment in the 800 block of Newark Road, police said.  A traffic stop was immediately conducted, and the driver, Adrian Martinez, 32, of Landenberg, showed visible signs of intoxication, police said. Martinez, who admitted to consuming beers within the past 30 minutes, failed field sobriety and a chemical breath test, police said. He processed and released pending an appearance in district court, police said.
