New Garden Police say 19-year-olds admit to smoking marijuana recently
On Saturday, March 22, at 12:17 a.m., a New Garden Township police officer eastbound on West Cypress Street observed a Honda Passport driving erratically, police said. After conducting a traffic stop, the officer made contact with the driver, Colton Chew, 19, of Kennett Square, and front-seat passenger. John James Salter, 19, of Avondale, both of whom had bloodshot glassy eyes, police said.
In addition, the officer detected a strong marijuana smell, police said, adding that both teens admitted to smoking marijuana a few minutes prior to being stopped, police said. Chew was taken into custody for suspicion of DUI and possession of a controlled substance; Salter was charged with possession of a controlled substance, police said. Both were released pending an appearance in district court, police said.
During the same traffic stop, a New Garden police officer observed a vehicle almost strike the marked patrol vehicle, which had its emergency lights, activated, police said. Officers contacted the driver, Mateo Ontiveros, 28, of Toughkenamon, who had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath along with bloodshot and glassy eyes; additionally, the officer observed two open beer cans in the cup-holder, police said. Ontiveros was taken into custody on suspicion of DUI, police said. During processing, police said they learned that the name Ontiveros initially provided was false and that he had a warrant for failure to appear for a 2011 DUI, police said. Ontiveros was arraigned and remanded to Chester County Prison after failing to post $2,500 cash bail, police said.
