New Garden Township officers say Wilmington man was also intoxicated
On Tuesday, April 8, at 11:45 p.m., a New Garden Township officer observed a vehicle travelling westbound on Baltimore Pike in the eastbound lane of travel, police said. A traffic stop was conducted in the 1700 block of Baltimore Pike, and the officer made contact with the driver, Juan Garcia-Posada, 23, of Wilmington, who exhibited multiple signs of intoxication.
Garcia-Posada was arrested after failing field sobriety tests, and during the investigation, police said they determined that he was operating a vehicle that had been reported as stolen in New Castle County. Garcia-Posada was arraigned on charges of receiving stolen property and driving under the influence and remanded to Chester County Prison after failing to post bail, police said.
On Wednesday, April 9, at 4:41 p.m., a New Garden Township officer observed a vehicle travelling on Newark Road make an abrupt stop and turn into a driveway in the 1000 block without using a turn signal, police said. A traffic stop was conducted, and the driver was observed making furtive movements into back seat area of the truck, police said. Contact was made with the driver, Cesar Ramirez, 32, of Toughkenamon, who handed the officer a Mexican ID card that contained what appeared to be powder cocaine on the bottom, police said.
Consent to search the vehicle was obtained, and the officer located a cigarette pack containing a small clear bag containing more suspected cocaine from the back seat, police said. Ramirez was taken into custody without incident, processed, and released pending an appearance in district court, police said.
New Garden Township officers were dispatched on April 12, at 12:04 p.m., to a two-vehicle accident in the 8700 block of Gap Newport Pike, police said. The striking vehicle attempted to leave the scene but became stuck in the grass along the roadside, police said.
Witnesses stated that the vehicle travelled into the oncoming lane of traffic and struck the vehicle which had stopped in an attempt avoid a collision, police said. Police said the driver of the striking vehicle, Yordy Hernandez, 19, of Avondale, was observed to have glassy eyes and a strong odor of alcohol. Hernandez was unable to stand on his own and was taken into custody for suspected DUI, police said. Hernandez refused to submit to a chemical test of his breath and after being processed was released pending an appearance at district court, police said.
