Collapse in New Garden spurs closure, rust in Kennett prompts another

bridge-closed1As weather and age continue to take their toll on the area’s infrastructure, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced a bridge closing in Kennett Township, and New Garden Township has notified residents that a road will be closed due to a bridge collapse.

PennDOT said it would close the state-owned bridge on Burnt Mill Road between Spring Mill and Norway Roads effective the morning of Friday, April 25, a Kennett Township news release said.  The “I” beams have rusted to the point that many of them have holes in the web covering areas from five to three inches wide, the release said.

PennDOT will post a detour going from Spring Mill to Norway Road. At this point, PennDOT does not have an estimated time that the bridge will be reopened, the release said.

The New Garden Township Public Works Department also issued a release on Thursday, April 24, to let residents know of a road closure in the 200 block of Thompson Road. The Public Works Department reports that a bridge collapsed at that location, the release said, adding that there were no injuries or damages reported.

Although through access is prohibited, vehicular traffic is permitted on Thompson Road from either Baltimore Pike or Hillendale Road to the closure location, which is near the railroad crossover. No estimate on when the bridge will be repaired is available yet, the release said.
