Victim was reportedly checking into treatment facility when theft occurred

On Tuesday, April 15, at 9:18 pm, New Garden Township officers responded to the 1300 block of Newark Road for the report of a vehicle theft, police said. Upon arrival, the victim said that he was checking into a treatment facility when he was approached by a subject wearing gray sweatpants, gray hoodie, and black flip-flops who identified himself as an employee and requested the victim’s keys and luggage, police said. While in the waiting area, the victim observed the “employee” leave the facility’s lot in the victim’s 1998 green Chevrolet Blazer, police said.

The alleged thief was later identified Keith Brown, 20, of Hatboro, a patient at the treatment facility. A warrant was issued for Brown, who was later picked up walking near the facility, police said. The vehicle was recovered the next day in Wilmington, De., police said. Brown, who admitted taking the vehicle, was arraigned on theft charges and remanded to Chester County Prison after failing to post $5,000 cash bail, court records said.

On Saturday, April 19, at 11:29 p.m., officers were dispatched to the intersection of Penn Green Road and Gap Newport Pike for the report of a male sleeping in a vehicle at the intersection, police said. Upon arrival, a Dodge Caravan was observed sitting stationary at a green traffic signal, and the driver was sleeping. with the vehicle in drive and his foot on the brake, police said. Officers opened the door to secure the vehicle, smelled alcohol, and tried for approximately two minutes to wake the driver, Mauricio Pizano-Mendoza, 38 of Avondale, police said. When Pizano-Mendoza finally exited the vehicle, he displayed signs of intoxication and was taken into custody for suspicion of DUI, police said. He was released pending an appearance in district court, police said

On Thursday, April 17, at 8:15 pm, officers responded to the 100 block of Laurel Heights Road for a report of a domestic disturbance between father and son, police said. Upon arrival, the victim said that his son had threatened to “cut his heart out” after they had been involved in a verbal argument, police said. Contact was attempted with Zachary Sweeney, 19, of Landenberg, who had barricaded himself in his room, police said. When an officer made entry, Sweeney became combative and was physically restrained for safety, police said. Sweeney, who admitted making the threat, was arrested for terroristic threats and harassment, arraigned and released on $2,500 unsecured bail, police said.

New Garden officers responded to the 100 block of Santilli Road on Friday, April 18, at 8 p.m. for an unconscious subject later upgraded to cardiac arrest due to a heroin overdose, police said. The patient’s mother advised that a female named Jada had been staying with her daughter, police said. Contact was made with the female, who gave police a false ID and appeared nervous, police said. She was later identified as Jada Ferguson 26, of Mill Hall; she was taken into custody and during a search, police said they found suspected heroin in her sock. Ferguson, who had warrants from Centre County, was arraigned and transported to Chester County Prison after failing to post 10 percent of $10,000 bail, court records said. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 2, records said.

Officers were alerted to a vehicle operator’s possible impairment on Sunday, April 20, at 7:11 p.m. northbound in the 1100 block of Newark Road, police said. The vehicle was observed with its right turn signal on and swerving, police said. Before initiating a traffic stop, an officer observed the driver throw litter out the window and almost strike a pole while driving off the side of the roadway, police said. Upon making contact with the driver, Gerardo Cano-Zavala, 44 of Cochranville, police said he exhibited multiple signs of intoxication and failed filed sobriety tests. Cano-Zavala was taken into custody for suspected DUI, processed, and released pending an appearance in district court, police said.

On Sunday, April 20, at 10:34 p.m., New Garden officers responded to the report of an erratic driver in a green Honda on Gap Newport Pike south of Newark Road, police said. Police said they conducted a traffic stop in the 100 block of Willow Street, making contact with the driver, Salomon Avila-Lopez, 29, of Kennett Square. Avila-Lopez, who showed multiple signs of intoxication, was taken into custody after failing field sobriety tests, police said. He was processed and released pending an appearance in district court, police said
