Kennett Township invites public to presentation on feasibility study
The Chandler Mill Bridge, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010, is Kennett Township’s oldest one-lane bridge, a county-owned span that has been awash in conflict for a number of years.
Closed to vehicular traffic for the past two years, the 1910 stone and steel bridge has generated controversy over whether it should be rehabbed or razed. The county and its engineers have argued that the quaintness of the two-way one-lane bridge should not trump safety while preservationists have advocated rehabilitation to maintain the area’s charm and tranquility.
The Kennett Township Board of Supervisors is urging the public to attend a meeting on Wednesday, April 30, at 7 p.m. at the Red Clay Room in the Kennett Fire Company Building to discuss the fate of the Chandler Mill Bridge, which overlooks the gurgling West Branch of the Red Clay Creek at the juncture of Chandler Mill and Bucktoe Roads.
The meeting will explore a variety of topics, including the cost to rehab or replace the bridge, road widening, legal implications if the township does or does not take ownership of the bridge, open space and public use changes along Chandler Mill and Bucktoe Roads, and input from emergency service and school transportation providers.
