New Garden Twp. Police say he passed out with vehicle running
On Monday, May 12, at 11:58 p.m., a New Garden Township officer observed a stationary vehicle in the middle of a parking lot in the area of Newark Road and Baltimore Pike with the driver slumped over in the seat, police said. Upon checking on the well-being of the driver, the officer found the vehicle running and an open beer in the driver’s right hand, police said. The officer removed the keys from the ignition and then took steps to waken the driver, Isidro Tapia-Meza, 45, of Lincoln University, police said.
While speaking to the driver, the officer smelled alcohol and noted that Tapia-Meza appeared in a confused state, police said. Upon exiting the vehicle, Tapia-Meza displayed signs of impairment that continued during field sobriety testing, at which point he was taken into custody for suspicion of DUI, police said. Tapia-Meza was released pending an appearance in district court, police said.
On Saturday, May 17, at 7:08 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 300 block of Scarlett Road for the report of an intoxicated person in front of a business, police said. Upon arrival, contact was made with Modesto Bernal, 51 of Kennett Square, who was found to be intoxicated and present at a business he had been previously warned to avoid, police said. Bernal was cited for public drunkenness and criminal trespass, police said.
A silver Mazda mini-van travelling northbound on Newark Road caught the attention of a New Garden officer on patrol on Tuesday, May 13, at 12:33 a.m. near the intersection of Baltimore Pike and Newark Road, police said. The right rear passenger was observed throwing trash out of the window onto the roadway, and a traffic stop was conducted, police said. The officer made contact with the passenger, Daniel Elliott, 28 of Wilmington, who admitted to the incident and appeared intoxicated, police said. Elliott was advised he would be receiving a citation for scattering rubbish, police said.
On Tuesday, May 13, at 8:35 p.m., a New Garden officer observed a vehicle driving erratically in the 800 block of Newark Road, repeatedly swerving and crossing the white fog line and yellow center lines on multiple occasions, police said. A traffic stop was conducted in the 1000 block of Newark Road, and the officer made contact with the driver, Juan Oseguera-Ortiz, 45 of Kennett Square, who had two teenage girls in the vehicle, police said. Oseguera-Ortiz exhibited signs of intoxication and was taken into custody and arrested for suspected drunken driving, reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child after failing field sobriety tests, police said. He was released pending an appearance in district court, police said.
On Thursday, May 15, at 6:58 pm, officers responded to the 900 block of Newark Road for the report of a male deliberately running into traffic, police said. When officers arrived, the man ran from a responding officer into the side of a moving vehicle, police said. Juan Bedolla-Lopez, 28 of Toughkenamon, was taken into custody and found to be under the influence, police said. Bedolla-Lopez was cited and then transported home, police said.
On Sunday, May 18, at 1:43 a.m., a New Garden officer on patrol in the 700 block of Newark Road observed an approaching southbound vehicle fail to dim its high beams and straddle the double yellow line, forcing the patrol vehicle to move to avoid contact, police said. A traffic stop was conducted at the intersection of Newark and Laurel Heights Road, police said. After making contact with the driver, Anthony Deeds, 32, of Newark, De., the officer smelled marijuana and observed a marijuana rolled cigar in plain view on the driver’s side floor, police said. Additional contraband was located inside the console when the driver removed his paperwork, police said. Deeds was arrested on numerous drug-related charges, arraigned, and released on $15,000 unsecured bail, police said.
