More than 100 kids participated in the Kennett Area Parks and Recreation Board’s annual Kids Cross Country Run last week. Pictured here is the overall winner Davis Piercy from Kennett Square.

KENNETT — The 11th annual  KAPRB Kid’s Cross Country run for 14 and under children was held last Thursday night on a picturesque evening at Anson B. Nixon Park.  For the 11th year in a row runners were able to compete in a beautiful 1.5 mile race around Anson B. Nixon Park for no charge .  What makes it extra special is that so many people donate their time, prizes and sponsorship for this event year after year.  The children were treated to free ice cream from Baskin Robbins in New Garden after they were done,  (chocolate and vanilla…delicious) trophies for winners, random prizes for all and t-shirts.

Course marshalls were mostly from KAPRB around the course directing the children and cheering them along, as well as parents and friends lining the course.  There was great competition for first place this year.Thirteen  year old Davis Piercy from Kennett Square ended up winning the race with a come from  behind win in exciting fashion.  Anna Iaccoco lead the whole way this year and took the girl’s division championship over speedy 10 year old Elizabeth Watson.  Emma’s Mom is an experienced runner herself and obviously the apple does not fall from the tree.  Unionville High School looks like thy have more talent coming to their number one ranked team in the near future with these two young ladies.
I asked Claire Finnfrock (race director) how she felt about the 11th annual KAPRB Kid’s Cross Country run and she replied, “We had a beautiful evening and 112 children attended and participated in the event. It was a lot of fun for the children in our community.  Children enjoyed free tee shirts, Applebee’s coupons (donated), Baskin Robbins ice cream (donated), toys/prizes, trophies to the winners (list attached), and pizza and water.”  Claire also  thanked the  sponsorship from Cari Orthodontics, Sinton Air Conditioning and Heating, Horizon, Iacocca Law, the Mushroom Festival and Kennett Run Charities.

Anson B. Nixon Park offers a lovely oasis in our town for many free events.  There are concerts on Wednesday nights throughout the summer,  paths to walk and run on, fishing for those with licenses, and Frisbee golf and picnicking for all in our community.
