June 4 Commencement to bond history and bright futures

Malvern, Pa. – Malvern Prep’s 123 members of the Malvern Prep senior class were honored the morning of May 18 during their final chapel service, during which underclassmen, faculty and senior parents paid tribute to the academic achievements, service and leadership of the Class of 2015.

In his homily, Malvern President the Rev. Jim Flynn, O.S.A. called attention to the brotherhood that this class created during their four years together. “The finest thing about today is how you have embraced the greatness of each other. What is remarkable is how you care for and support each other,” Flynn said. “You have a great bond. Don’t let it die.”

Malvern’s National Merit Finalist, Alexander Yablonski of Phoenixville, and eight Commended Students were acknowledged, as well as the 48 members of the National Honor Society.

Highlighting the service was the presentation of the Kevin J. Fitzpatrick ’81 Senior Class Award to Nick Parente of Lincoln University and Brian Rawlins of West Chester. This award was voted on solely by the seniors and recognize seniors who represents kindness, friendship, leadership and loyalty to his class and Malvern Prep.

U.S. Navy Blue & Gold Officer Steven D. Curlee ’75 was on hand to honor Tyler Barr of Chester Springs, who will be joining Naval ROTC at Cornell University, and Andrew Gosselin of Downingtown, who will be joining Naval ROTC at Boston College. “I am happy to stand in a place that chooses to recognize those who have chosen the military path,” Curlee said when announcing the students’ NROTC scholarships.

In addition, outgoing Student Council President John Ryan Doane of Glen Mills addressed his fellow classmates and passed the Student Council Gavel to President-Elect Alexander Freud of Exton.

Another highlight of the senior tribute service was the dedication of the 2014 yearbook, the Malvernian. Editors Zach DeCarlo of Wayne and David Lanetti of Malvern offered this year’s yearbook to Ann Wuetig, who has served the class of 2015 as both a health teacher and school counselor.

The Malvern Prep Baccalaureate Mass and Commencement will be held on Thursday, June 4 at 10:00 a.m. at Wolfington Plaza on the chapel lawn.

This year’s Commencement Speaker is Malvern social studies teacher and alumni Thomas McGuire ’75, a historian and author who has written five books about the American Revolution and is nationally recognized as the leading scholar on Philadelphia-area Revolutionary War battles.
