YMCALogoTapping its historic roots, the YMCA of Greater Brandywine will join countless organizations across the country today in celebrating the National Day of Prayer.

Founded to help Americans revive with their spiritual lives, the Y will host a variety of activities to kindle or rekindle the joy and power that can be found in prayer.

“At the Y, we work to strengthen spirit, body and mind. That is our charge, and we take that seriously,” said Denise L. Day, president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Brandywine. “Prayer helps to deepen our sense of gratitude for our blessings and to focus our attention on the needs of others.

“If we can encourage people to take a moment, just a moment in their day, to do this, we would have helped to forge an even stronger community – and build a better us,” Day said.

Established as the Young Men’s Christian Association, the Y embraces people of all faith traditions, as well as nonbelievers.

Thursday’s activities are designed to be ecumenical and inclusive. Branch activities will range from pastor-led outdoor group prayer to children designing boxes to collect names and conditions that welcome a thoughtful, heartfelt word.

Most events are open to the public, taking place in the morning, afternoon and evening. Contact your area Y branch for a complete schedule of activities.
