KENNETT — As construction began yesterday to replace the Burnt Mill Road bridge over a branch of the Red Clay Creek in Kennett Township, Rep. Steve Barrar (R-160) expresses his gratitude and appreciation to Gov. Tom Wolf and his staff for their assistance in prioritizing the project.
“This bridge carried more than 500 vehicles each day, and Commonwealth citizens have been inconvenienced by its closure,” Barrar said. “I appreciate Gov. Wolf working with me to expedite the process of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation rebuilding the bridge, which is estimated to be open for motorists by 2017.”
The bridge was closed on April 25, 2014, after the steel beams were determined to be inadequate for safely supporting vehicles during a bridge inspection.
During the next three months, PennDOT will transform the one-lane bridge to one with two 9-foot travel lanes and two 2-foot shoulders.
Burnt Mill Road traffic is being detoured over Norway Road (township road) and Spring Mill Road. Local access is being maintained up to the construction zone.
