Time for a closet overhaul

kellycolumnnewest916My closet isn’t big enough for my clothes.

Some (like my husband) may peek inside and think “no one person requires that much stuff.” Others (like my girlfriends in similar predicaments) think “poor Kelly, she really should be able to convert that spare bedroom into the closet of her dreams.”

Potato, po-ta-toe.

The point is, I need to re-organize. Sounds relatively painless, doesn’t it? Well, it’s NOT. It’s a big, giant, pain in the butt and I am over it.

In the attempt to be productive, I spent a few hours separating the fashions that I love from those I am iffy about. I figured, if I can’t remember the last time I wore it, it could go. Before I could change my mind, I decided to bag them up and drive over to Clothes Mentor, a consignment shop on Rte. 202, that will give cash for your items right on the spot.

There were several flaws with this plan. Number one, it was a rainy Saturday afternoon and other women obviously had the same idea that I did. Number two, I was hungry. Number three, I elected to stay in the store to wait for them to review my stuff, as I was informed that it would take “less time” than dropping off and coming back. Number four, that was a fat lie (as I sat there for 70 minutes). And, last but not least, I was cranky.

All in all, I left with $40 cash for items that probably cost me $350 originally. And, I couldn’t help but be irritated when they “passed” on several pieces claiming that they were “out-dated or too well loved.” Umm, come again?

So, I have decided to venture into the world of online consigning. I have had multiple people convince me that I am capable (though I am still doubtful). Websites like Poshmark make it “easy” to sell by simply uploading pictures, entering a description, and naming a price. They will even send you the shipping label. Sounds good, right? I am going to give it a go and report back.

Have any of you tried it?
