Another New Year, another new list

Resolutions are made to be broken, right?

It’s that time of year again.

Resolutions, rebirth and renewal… blah, blah, blah.

In all seriousness, January 1st is a date that I look forward to.  I don’t know if I’ve ever shed light on this particular aspect of my neurotic personality, but, I welcome the 1st of EACH month as a new opportunity to break all of my bad habits.

I am especially delighted if the first of the month occurs on a Monday (as opposed to trying to “eliminate ALL bad foods from my diet” on say, “Friday Pizza Night” or “Saturday Chinese Take-Out”).

But, the most holiest of all “firsts of the month” obviously happens immediately after that big crystal ball drops in Times Square.

I prepare a written list EVERY year.  Sad to say, I have many repeating items and rotate in a new concept every now and again.

Here is my 2012 in a nutshell:

  1. I will drink at least one glass of water before every meal (seems simple enough, yet, I’ve usually broken this one by around January 10th)
  2. Do 50 push-ups per day while watching TV (annually makes its way onto this list)
  3. Eliminate clutter from my bedside table thereby creating a calming atmosphere (will never happen)
  4. Removing school papers from backpacks in a timely fashion…in other words, not once a semester  (COMPLETE SLACKER, I’ll own it)
  5. Taking clean clothes from the laundry basket and putting them into drawers rather than telling the boys to dig through in the hopes of finding underwear
  6. Resisting the urge to have a cookie EVERY time I make a cup of tea (again, annually present)
  7. Getting into the weight room at the Y instead of avoiding eye contact with it like it’s a person
  8. Stop picking at my cuticles
  9. Cleaning out my closet and getting rid of things that I haven’t worn
  10. Limit my coffee consumption (under 40 ounces a day is a win in my book)

It is a rather small list.  It does not appear insurmountable…yet, at least 8 of those 10 will inevitably be broken in no time flat.

Does this make the effort of creating it a waste of time?

Nah.

That’s what February 1st is for…(unfortunately it’s a Wednesday…which historically does not bode well for me)

Oh well.

Happy New Year!  May 2012 make all of your dreams come true!
