EAST MARLBOROUGH — Unionville High School is proud to present Charley’s Aunt, with performances on April 20th, 21st, and 23nd at 7:30pm. Written by Brandon Thomas, Charley’s Aunt is a classic screwball comedy that was first produced at the Royalty Theater in London in 1892 and became a smash hit. Since then it has entertained literally thousands of audiences in theater and movie productions all over the world.

Charley’s Aunt is set at Oxford University, in the quarters of two undergraduates, Jack Chesney and Charley Wykeham, who are frantically searching for a way to express their love to their soon departing sweethearts, Kitty Verdun and Amy Spettigue. They invite the ladies to lunch with Charley’s wealthy aunt from Brazil, “where the nuts come from,” calculating that she can act as a chaperone and allow them to finally pop the question. When she is delayed and won’t make it in time, they persuade their chum Fancourt “Babbs” Babberley to don a dress and become Charley’s “aunt” so that their important get-together can proceed. Nothing says comedy like a man in a dress, and Charley’s Aunt is the archetypal man-in-a-dress comedy. Then the real aunt arrives and any semblance of sanity disappears – but the hilarity continues till there’s a happy ending for all.

Tickets at the door are $7 adults/$5 students and senior citizens. Performances are at Unionville High School, 750 Unionville Road, Kennett Square, PA 19348.
