Herbert Auld Anderson
Herbert Auld Anderson, 89, died Dec. 23 at his retirement home in Myrtle Beach, SC after a long illness. Mr. Anderson was a native of Brooklyn, NY. In his youth he was a soprano in the St Paul’s Episcopal Church boys’ choir and graduated from Brooklyn Tech High School where he lettered in football and lacrosse. He attended Adelphi University on Long Island, NY on a football scholarship under coach Allen (“Al”) Davis, future owner and general manager of the NFL Oakland Raiders. At Adelphi, in addition to a two-sport athlete, he was an officer of Omicron Pi fraternity, a campus policeman, and a member of the Platoon Leaders Corps (PLC). Upon graduation, he was commissioned a lieutenant in the US Marine Corps and served four years in a variety of posts, including two years in Okinawa, Japan with the Third Marine Expeditionary Force (lll MEF)
After military service, he joined Mobil Chemical as a sales and account manager until its acquisition by Valspar in 1984. He retired from Valspar as a national account manager in 1999.
A longtime resident of Downingtown, Mr. Anderson was a devout member of St James Church where he was an usher and volunteered as a visiting parishioner at local retirement homes. Earlier in his career in Pittsburgh, he served in the vestry of Christ Episcopal Church and was a mentor for foster care youth.
A dedicated family man, survivors include his wife of 62 years, Ann Noir Anderson of Myrtle Beach, SC; and two daughters, Dianne Anderson Kane of Myrtle Beach, SC and Carol Anderson Boochever of Washington, DC; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
