PHOENIXVILLE — Technical College High School (TCHS) Pickering Special Education Teacher Laura McGinley was recently recognized with the Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction award, a special program within the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS) that honors educators worldwide. McGinley was nominated for her outstanding dedication to excellence in education and because of the difference she is making in her students’ lives.

“Winning this award made me realize that even though working in education is hard work, what I do each day really does matter and I love helping my students learn and grow,” stated McGinley. “TCHS is my family. We all respect and look out for each other and I love working here,” she added.

The NSHSS was formed in 2002 and helps to advance the goals of high-achieving students through unique opportunities such as internships, international study and scholarships. Currently, there are more than 1.7 million NSHSS members located throughout 170 countries. Members are inducted for life and have the opportunity to be connected to resources that help develop their strengths and encourage them to pursue opportunities from high school to college and to their careers.
Each year, student members of NSHSS are invited to nominate an educator who has made a significant contribution to their academic career. The award honors educators who serve as a role model to students and have helped inspire students to develop as leaders, scholars and citizens. Nigel Cook, current TCHS Pickering student, nominated McGinley for this prestigious award.
“I nominated Mrs. McGinley because many times people who work the hardest are overlooked and not regarded at the level that they should be. She’s a great teacher to not only me but all students she comes in contact with in the building. She stands up for and supports everyone. She focuses on your strengths instead of the areas you may not be as good in,” stated Cook. “She’s also encouraging, always points out what’s positive, never puts others down and always finds a way to make you smile and feel good about moving forward,” he added.
TCHS Principal, Erin Petters, echoed Cook’s words. “Laura exemplifies everything that a teacher should strive to be. She’s a hard worker, she’s dedicated to the kids and she’s dedicated to the cause of education. She truly just embodies everything we believe should be the approach of educators everywhere,” said Petters.
In addition to being connected to meaningful content, resources and personal networks, as an Educator of Distinction, McGinley is able to apply for grants to attend professional conferences, pursue advanced degrees and enhance the delivery of classroom instruction. She is also eligible to apply for the Claes Nobel Educator of the Year award, which provides $5,000 to one educator and $1,000 to nine other recipients.
