For the 11th year in a row, Great Valley High School came out on top amongst 22 other Chester County high schools in the Chester County Academic Competition. This year, two teams will represent Chester County at the State Academic Competition on Friday, April 29, at the State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg, PA.

Hosted by Representative John Lawrence (R-13th District), and sponsored by the Pennsylvania State Education Association, Great Valley High School and West Chester East High School will compete against 19 other schools from across the state. The championship team will receive a $2,000 scholarship for their high school, while the finalists will each receive $500 for their school.

“We are so excited to be able to host a competition in person after a three-year hiatus,” said Special Events Coordinator Jay Della Ragione. “Although this year’s competition will not be held at the Pennsylvania State Capitol, as it has been in the past, we are looking forward to holding the event at the State Museum of Pennsylvania where not only has their staff been amazing to work with, but students will have the opportunity to tour the museum between matches during this all-day event,” added Della Ragione. “We cannot wait to get this competition underway!”

The Pennsylvania Academic Competition began in 1992 under the sponsorship of Representative Joseph Pitts (R-Chester County), who provided a $5,000 WAM grant to cover costs. The first annual competition was held in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives on May 29, 1992, with 12 school districts representing 11 different intermediate units. Now in its 31st year, approximately 20 intermediate units will be represented at the 2022 Pennsylvania Academic Competition.
