Avon Grove School District Citadel Heart of Learning Award Grand Prize finalist William Langhorne with family, students and colleagues.

For the past 22 years, Citadel Credit Union has recognized local, hard-working teachers who are dedicated to their role and classroom by honoring them with the Citadel Heart of Learning Award. The award is open to any public, private or charter school teacher and nominations are accepted from students, parents, administrators, peers and community members.

Out of the thousands of nominations that were received, William Langhorne, mathematics teacher at Avon Grove High School (AGHS), was selected as one of three outstanding educators to receive the grand prize for the 2023 Citadel Heart of Learning Award. As a grand prize winner, Langhorne will receive $10,000; $5,000 of which will go to the school and $5,000 of which will go directly to Langhorne.

Upon learning that he won the grand prize, Langhorne said, “I am blown away by the honor and humbled by the recognition. I love my job and enjoy coming to school every day.” Langhorne continued, “I come from a family of teachers, and I am proud to continue a legacy of excellence in the classroom.”

Langhorne, who has been teaching at Avon Grove High School for 15 years, added, “Something I do in my classroom that helps me connect with my students is sharing stories. Whether the stories come from me or from the students, they help break up the period. The experience of receiving the Citadel Heart of Learning Award will be a fun story to share for years to come.”

“Bill is an outstanding teacher and coach,” said Dr. M. Christopher Marchese, superintendent of Avon Grove School District. “His dedication to AGHS and our students is unmatched and for this he is well respected by his students and his peers. He is very deserving of this recognition, and we are fortunate to have such a caring educator in our district.”
