Dr. Linda G. Carter

Dr. Linda G. Carter, 73, of Kennett Square PA, passed away on May 24, 2023 at Christiana Care Hospital in Wilmington, DE.

Linda was born on September 23, 1949, in Ellwood City, PA to Rex and Maxine (Brim) Carter.  She grew up in Bucyrus, Ohio, where her father was manager of the JC Penney store. An excellent student, Linda graduated from Case Western Reserve University in 1971 with a BA in Chemistry, followed by a Master’s degree from Purdue University (1973) and a PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Illinois (1980). A smart and talented person to work with, Linda pioneered work in food safety in the DuPont Crop Protection Business and led the DuPont Food Safety Initiative before she ended her career at Stroud Water Resource Center.

In 1978 Linda married Dr. Patrick T. Hardesty. They were generous hosts and enjoyed many good times with friends and family. Linda and Pat traveled widely, camped (there was always bratwurst on the camp stove), loved their feline friends, and spent many hours in the great outdoors plus quite a few indoors keeping up with their favorite teams. Nieces and nephews remember the special gifts, often science-oriented, that came from Uncle Pat and Aunt Linda. Pat died in 2019; Linda’s devoted care for him in his lengthy final illness is a treasured memory.

Linda is survived by sisters- and brothers-in-law Patricia Hardesty, Dr. Kathleen Hardesty Doig, Dr. Martha Hardesty and Nasser Pooladian, Susan Hardesty Routt, Richard and Nancy Hardesty, Charles and Rita Hardesty, nine nieces and nephews and their spouses and children. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brothers-in law Stephen B. Hardesty and Dr. James C. Doig.

Visitation will take place at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, 7200 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, DE at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 17, 2023. A funeral Mass will follow at 10 A.M.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Kennett Area Community Service, P.O. Box 1025, Kennett Square, PA 19348 or to the charity of your choice.

Special thanks are extended to the many people who cared for and comforted Linda.

Chandler Funeral Home & Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.
