The Kennett Library & Resource Center will celebrate its Grand Opening on August 27. All are welcome to attend.

The celebration will begin at 1 pm with a ceremonial book pass down State Street, followed by a land acknowledgment by the Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania, brief remarks by local dignitaries, and a ribbon cutting.

Community members are encouraged to participate in the book pass. The day will be filled with activities for the whole family. Explore the maker spaces, preview the upcoming programs, and enjoy face painting, food trucks, and more.

Chris Manna, Executive Director of Kennett Library, said, “This building was built through many stones and layers of construction. Likewise, this library has been built off the backs of many different kinds of supporters–both patrons and partners to provide this glorious new structure.  Our grand opening celebration is our way of saying thank you for the past. Please come and use all the resources available in the present and understand how this library stands to impact generations to come many years into the future.”

The new Kennett Library & Resource Center features a 110-seat auditorium, two maker spaces, an audio-visual room, classrooms, tutor rooms, quiet reading areas, a terrace overlooking State Street, ADA-accessible spaces, free parking, and so much more.

Brad Peiper, President of the Board of Trustees, said, “We are so excited to welcome the community into our new library. This building project has been a 25-year-long journey but is finally here, and we are so proud to be finally opening our doors!”

After a soft opening at the end of June, the library saw record numbers of visitors and new patrons. The first day brought over 1,000 people, and by the end of the first week, the library saw over 4,500.

Jeff Yetter, Capital Campaign Chair, said, “When I look at the new Kennett Library & Resource Center, two things come to mind. The first is the community that came together despite all of the naysayers and challenges to make this dream a reality. Secondly, I am filled with gratitude for the support of the eight municipalities we serve, our State legislators, and our Federal legislators, who have provided 40% of the funding. I am so moved by the over 1,300 private individuals and foundations that have given so generously to get us this far. We are just $1.9 million short of our $22 million goal. A goal that we were told was unattainable. Thanks to everyone who has gotten us this far, and thanks to the folks who will step up and get us over the finish line.”

With triple the space, the new library will be able to offer even more essential programs and services for children, teens, and adults. Programs include ESL classes, art workshops, family storytimes, nature camps, book groups, webinars, author talks, and more.

Peiper concluded, “The mission of the library is to promote education and literacy in our community with a major emphasis on diversity and inclusivity as guiding principles. Please visit us and ask for a tour of this new facility or just explore on your own. The Kennett Library & Resource Center truly has something special for everyone!”

The whole community is welcome to celebrate at the library (320 East State Street, Kennett Square, PA 19348) from 1 pm – 5 pm on Sunday, August 27.
