Philadelphia man held for trial on armed-robbery charge

New Garden police said he brandished a gun and grabbed cash from a business

New Garden Township Police announced the arrest today of a Philadelphia man charged with a July 11 armed robbery.

Police said Timothy T. Harris, 32, entered a store in the New Garden Shopping Center at 345 Scarlett Road in Kennett Square, brandished a black handgun partially covered with a bandana, and demanded cash. The victim complied, resulting in an undisclosed amount of money being stolen, police said.

Harris waived his preliminary hearing today on the charges – as well as those associated with a July 13 bank robbery in West Grove – court records said.

New Garden police charged Efrain Mendez-Diaz, 28 of Toughkenamon, with loitering/prowling at night, criminal mischief and public drunkenness stemming from an alleged incident on July 1. Police said they were called to the 900 block of Newark Road at 11:40 p.m. for a subject looking into the caller’s bedroom window. A description was given, and Mendez-Diaz was located a short distance away; he had damaged the victim’s window and was also under the influence of alcohol, police said.

Javier Gaytan, 34, of Wilmington De.,was taken into custody and charged with driving under the influence on July 12, New Garden police said. Police were called to the 1300 block of Newark Road for a report of a hit-and-run accident, which allegedly occurred in Delaware. The victim had followed the vehicle until it pulled into a parking lot, police said. Upon contact with Gaytan, police said he showed obvious signs of intoxication.

New Garden police said Alejandro Antonio, 42 of Cochranville, was taken into custody for alleged drunken-driving following a July 13 traffic stop. Police said Antonio failed to dim his high beams to opposing traffic and was driving erratically. Upon contact with officers, he displayed bloodshot eyes, smelled of alcohol, appeared disoriented and admitted to consuming several beers, police said.
