During last year’s Black History Month celebration, second-grade students at East Ward Elementary School honored influential figures by researching and presenting on notable individuals from Black history.

Black History Month is observed annually in February, and Downingtown Area School District (DASD) is proud to join this year’s celebration of the contributions and successes of African Americans both in the United States and around the world.

The individual credited for the creation of the month of celebration is Carter G. Woodson. Black History Month became officially recognized in 1976 by President Gerald Ford, who said, “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”
Throughout February, DASD students and staff will engage in a variety of educational and creative activities, including studying the lives and legacies of prominent African-American figures, reading works by legendary authors, and participating in performances such as songs, dances, and poetry.

As part of the district’s celebration, DASD will welcome award-winning actor and singer Leslie Odom, Jr., who will speak to students about perseverance, achieving their goals, and staying focused on their dreams. Additionally, dancer and choreographer Manny Chacon will perform a dynamic step show, showcasing the evolution of dance traditions rooted in various African cultures.
In support of the district’s focus on fostering a positive school climate, Justin Brown, Director of Student Relations and School Climate (SRSC), emphasized the importance of Black History Month in celebrating achievements while continuing efforts to ensure every student feels valued. “Black History Month is an opportunity to reflect on the remarkable contributions of African Americans throughout history while also recognizing the ongoing work we must do to ensure every student feels valued, seen, and heard,” said Brown.
