To The Editor,

The introduction of micro trends into the fashion industry has changed the way we produce and buy clothing. Clothing manufacturers are keeping up with consumer demands for these low-priced articles of clothing, but at what cost? Throwaway clothing culture has become a huge player in climate change from overflowing landfills, polluted rivers/ oceans, and incinerated textile waste releasing CO2.
As conscious consumers, we must account for how our consumption impacts the environment. Statistics by businesswaste.com state that it can take more than 200 years for textiles to decompose in landfills. Cheaper textiles are composed of synthetic fabrics which never decompose which have lasting effects on our environment and if we don’t counteract this waste now, we may reach our planet’s point of no return.
As a society, we must collectively discard our textile waste in a responsible manner and urge fashion companies to drastically reduce their waste.
