The Westtown-East Goshen Police Commission announced the appointment of David Leahy as the new Chief of Police for the Westtown-East Goshen Regional Police Department (WEGO) following an extensive nationwide search.
While new to this position, Chief Leahy is far from new to WEGO.
He started with the department over twenty-six years ago as a patrol officer and has been there ever since. Prior to leading WEGO as Interim Chief for the last ten months, he was a Lieutenant on the WEGO Command Staff. While the match seemed perfect, the process of getting to this end point was extensive.
“That it eventually resulted in the elevation of Dave — from Interim Chief status in which he had served for ten and half months — to our next Police Chief during a time of expected challenge and commitment to change not just for law enforcement in general, but WEGO specifically —is a testimonial to his transformational collaborative firm -but- fair leadership style, the respect with which he’s held by those he leads (uniformed and administration), the elected policymakers to whom he reports, the township management teams with which he works, and our residents he serves,” stated Police Commission Chair Richard Pomerantz.
Vice-Chair of the commission Cody Bright also expressed his satisfaction regarding the result. “When we began this process, we did so unaware how it might end up. But knowing now that, with Dave as WEGO’s Police Chief for years to come, I have no doubt our police department will continue its commitment to deliver excellent law enforcement services to our community,” commented Bright.
At his first Police Commission meeting since officially being selected to lead the department, Chief Leahy expressed gratitude and optimism for the future of WEGO.
“Leading the officers of this department is a privilege and I look forward to remaining in this role long-term. I’m very excited to continue to work with the Police Commission, the two townships, and to serve the residents of both Westtown and East Goshen.” A formal swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for December 19th.
