Organization to receive award of $582,472 to expand services
KENNETT SQUARE — For the first time in its history, La Comunidad Hispana has received an award of $582,472 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to continue and enhance health-care services to those in need as well as designation as a federally qualified health center, the organization said in a news release.
“This award will allow La Comunidad to expand services and meet our goals of providing health care for immigrants and low-income residents in Chester County,” said Alice Moorhead, who chairs the board. “We have proved over the years that we give quality service. Our staff is commended for all of its great work in securing this award.”
Margarita Queralt Mirkil, the agency’s executive director, said the designation as a federally qualified center will allow LCH – expected to double patient volume by 2012 – to expand services to a greater number of low-income and vulnerable populations in southern Chester County. “Furthermore, the designation also serves as the catalyst for increased operational efficiencies that will enhance all aspects of our care and services in southern Chester County,” Mirkil said.
La Comunidad Hispana, located in the 700 block of West Cypress Street in Kennett Square, was established in 1973 as a community-based nonprofit organization to empower immigrants and low-income residents in Chester County to stay healthy, build strong families and lead productive, fulfilling lives. LCH is a bilingual, bicultural agency that reflects the community it serves. For more information, go to www.lacomunidadhispana.org or call 610-444-7550.
