Residents urged to let police know if they will be out of town
With the holiday season approaching, incidents of thefts and residential break-ins can take a sharp increase, said New Garden Township police. These incidents are often crimes of opportunity and can be reduced by following the tips below.
Always lock your vehicle, even in the garage. Place purchases and valuables out of sight, preferably in the trunk. Make sure your GPS is hidden.
If thieves can’t see the reward, they usually will not force their way into your vehicle. Unfortunately, thefts occur everywhere. It is an unfortunate and all-too common occurrence to leave the garage door open with an unlocked vehicle and valuables inside, police said.
Additionally, with holiday travel, which may take you from your home for extended periods, take extra security precautions, including locking doors and windows; leaving lights or audio equipment on and parking a vehicle in the driveway to create the impression someone is home; activating alarms; advising a trusted neighbor or friend of your plans and absence from home; and refraining from publicizing your absence on social websites.
Residents of New Garden Township may request a property check from the police department. Contact the New Garden Township police administrative office at 610-268-2907, ext. 100, to arrange this service.
