Online buyers allegedly make counterfeit overpayment to get refunds

A resident in the 800 block of Wayne Avenue described what Kennett Square police say is a frequent scam: using a counterfeit money order to overpay for an item and then requesting a refund from the seller.

Police said the resident advertised furniture for sale on Craigslist and received a response from a buyer who “mistakenly sent a money order for more than the agreed upon price and asked the resident to cash the m0ney order and send the buyer back the additional money.” Police said the money order is “most likely counterfeit,” and they are investigating the incident, which was reported Dec. 5 at 8:50 a.m.

An investigation into a Nov. 13 theft of cell phones, headphones, a knee brace, a book bag, and a debit card from a business in the 100 block of Race Street has led to the arrest of two 20-year-old Kennett Square residents, borough police said.

Police said Angelo Gilbert was released on $5,000 unsecured bail after being charged with theft, receiving stolen property, access device fraud and identity theft. A warrant has been issued for Pedro Guerrero-Rojas, police said.

Police said they are investigating the theft of cash from a business in the 100 block of West State Street sometime between 1 and 3 p.m. on Dec. 10, and the theft of cash during a burglary reported on Dec. 11 between 4:20 and 7:30 p.m. in the 400 block of West State Street.

A 27-year-old Kennett Square man had been charged with simple assault, harassment and false reports to law enforcement, police said. Cirilo Santiago was involved in an incident that occurred Dec. 9 in the 500 block of Center Street, police said, adding that he failed to post $5,000 bail and was taken to Chester County Prison.

Two Oxford residents were charged with drunken-driving in separate incidents recently, police said. Jose Magana-Magana, 20, was arrested following a traffic stop in the 100 block of North Walnut Street on Dec. 8 at 5:06 p.m., and Jesus Herrera-Aguilera was cited following a traffic stop on Dec. 13 at 11:11 p.m. in the 100 block of West State Street, police said.

Tyrone Motley, 44, of Avondale, was cited for public drunkenness and disorderly conduct on Dec. 3 at 2:26 p.m. at West South and Center Streets, police said.

Jennifer Calderon, 34, of Kennett Square, was cited Dec. 4 for letting her dogs loose in the 500 block of Penn Avenue, police said.

A traffic stop Dec. 14 in the 500 block of East State Street at 11:38 p.m. led to the arrest of a Delaware woman, police said. Helena Doe, 46, of Bear, who was wanted in Howard County, Md., was unable to post $10,000 bail and was taken to Chester County Prison to await extradition, police said.
