KENNETT SQUARE — Kennett High School is hosting top musicians from 35 high schools in the southeast Pennsylvania region who will perform a variety of music on Saturday, Jan. 26, at 2 p.m. in the school’s auditorium.
Each year, the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) District 12 selects musicians who come together for a short time to practice and perform a concert. Dr. M. Gregory Martin, symphonic and marching band director at West Chester University, will conduct the band.
Six Kennett students were among 118 selected from Chester, Delaware and Philadelphia counties during December auditions for the prestigious ensemble.
Anton Romano, director of bands at Kennett, said his students are grateful for the opportunity to play with other high-caliber musicians. “They have put in a lot of time in their programs and find it rewarding to play with others with the same mindset.”
Students have been practicing Sousa marches, Holst’s First Suite of very early concert band music, and other works, including some written in the last five years, said Romano. The musicians will rehearse together on Thursday and Friday at Kennett High School for the weekend performance.
Tickets are $5 and will be available at the door for general admission seating. If bad weather hampers practice time, the concert will be held later on Saturday, and the updated performance time will be posted on the District’s website, www.kcsd.org.
