NEW GARDEN — A fast-moving blaze Thursday morning left about 40 people homeless as an eight-unit apartment building caught fire.

Avondale Fire Company — along with West Grove and Hockessin, Del. fire companies were alerted to a house fire at 140 Starr Road just before 10 a.m. Thursday, according to reports from the Avondale Fire Company.

Initial reports suggested a mother and daughter might have been trapped in a second-floor apartment, reports that proved to be inaccurate. All residents of the building were reported to have gotten out safely. No injuries were reported.

However, the fire, which apparently started in one of the eight apartment units, totally gutted the building.

Because ofthe size and intensity of the fire, fire crews from Avondale, West Grove, Kennett, Longwood, Po-Mar-Lin, Hockessin, and Oxford operated for about four hours to bring the blaze under control.

The blaze is now under investigation by the Chester County and State Fire Marshalls. Red Cross and Chester County Emergency agencies are assisting residents with accommodations.
