The Chester Delaware County Farm Bureau takes pride in providing modest scholarships to students who will be attending colleges as a way to encourage them to bring their expertise back into the farming community, officials said.

Typically, the bureau provides funding to first-year students; however, a Landenberg student prompted an exception, said Duncan Allison, a spokesman for the bureau. He said Katherine Sharon first received a scholarship in 2011.

“We have been supporting Katherine Sharon for two years at vet school and plan to continue doing so,” said Allison. He said Sharon is attending Maryland Virginia Regional Veterinary School at the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg, Va., and has applied each year and met the criteria, he said. “Hopefully she will apply again so that we can support her again for her final year, 2014/2015, as she plans to graduate in May 2015,” he said.

Allison said the bureau recognizes the importance of a highly trained work force to the regional farming industry. “All areas of farming require higher levels of education, but animal health is particularly critical,” he said.

He said many veterinary students specialize in small animals and pets so having a student interested in large animal care is particularly valuable. “The Chester Delaware County Farm Bureau is indeed delighted to be able to support, even in such a small way, a student so hard-working and dedicated as Katherine,” he said.
