Countywide collection being hosted on Saturday in New Garden

baSeventy-three Chester County municipalities are hosting a Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Collection Event for county residents on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the New Garden Township Maintenance Garage on Rt. 41 near Newark Road.

For the first time, electronics will be collected at this event, said a news release from the Chester County Solid Waste Authority.   Participant may be asked for proof of residency, and the event is not open to contractors or business representatives.

Materials that will be accepted for drop-off include TVs, old computers and peripherals, oil-based paint and no more than 220 pounds or 25 gallons per household of cleaning and maintenance products that are labeled as toxic, poisonous, caustic, flammable, ignitable, corrosive, reactive, caution, warning, danger or hazardous.

Materials that will not be collected include latex paint (a nonhazardous material that can be safely discarded by drying or pouring into a plastic bag with absorbent material like newspaper or rags) used motor oil, household alkaline batteries, tires, medical waste, gas cylinders, smoke detectors, unidentified waste, commercial and industrial waste, explosives, ammunition and appliances containing Freon.

Interested residents can visit www.chestercountyswa.org or call their municipality or the Chester County Solid Waste Authority at 610-273-3771, ext. 228 for information on the proper disposal of unacceptable materials and for the other regional collection events scheduled. The New Garden Township Maintenance Garage is located at 8934 Gap Newport Road, Landenberg, 19350.
