Chadds Ford Days, Mushroom Festival to offer myriad activities this weekend

Not surprisingly, the annual Mushroom Festival will feature all things fungi this weekend.

Not surprisingly, the annual Mushroom Festival will feature all things fungi this weekend.

Two family-friendly festivals are vying for area residents’ attention this weekend, and since they both occur over more than one day, you can even do both.

The Mushroom Festival starts on Friday at 6 p.m. in downtown Kennett Square with a parade followed by dancing in the street to the tunes of Good Foot until 9:30 p.m. Downtown restaurants will offer al fresco dining and merchants will be open with special exhibits to celebrate the First Friday Art Stroll.

The fungi festivities will continue on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Highlights will include an Antique and Classic Car Show on Saturday; a National Fried Mushroom Eating Championship on Saturday at 3 p.m.; a soup and wine event and Mushroom Run/Walk on Sunday; and two cooking demonstrations on Sunday at 1 and 3 p.m. by celebrity chef Carla Hall, co-host of The Chew (tickets are required and are available in advance on the website).

Chadds Ford Days will be celebrated on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the grounds of the Chadds Ford Historical Society. Started as a way to commemorate the Battle of the Brandywine, the fair has grown to include numerous family-centered activities.

This year’s event will include antique cars from Auburn Height and Last Chance Garage, and Revolutionary War Reenactors from the 2nd Pennsylvania Regiment, who will demonstrate musket firing. In addition, Kids Korner has myriad children’s activities planned, many of which involve art.

Admission is free to members of the Chadds Ford Historical Society and $5 for adults; kids, dogs and parking are free. For a complete schedule, visit http://www.chaddsfordhistory.org/events/chadds-ford-days/.
