New Garden officers say drunk driver did damage, kept going

A speeding green Pontiac Sunfire that allegedly blew a stop sign attracted the attention of New Garden Township officers on Friday, Nov. 22 at 12:40 a.m., police said. Officers were on stationary patrol in the area of Penn Green and Starr Roads when the vehicle continued north on Penn Green Road, dragging its rear bumper, said police, who initiated a traffic stop in the 100 block of Cooper Road.

Upon approach to the vehicle, heavy damage was observed, including a bent driver’s side door, damaged sunroof, and shattered windshield, police said. The driver, Antonio Perez, 22, of Landenberg, advised he was on his way home from a restaurant in Delaware where he had consumed alcoholic beverages, police said. He admitted to hitting something but was unsure of what and where; after showing signs of impairment during field sobriety tests, Perez was taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence, police said.

Dennis Perkins, 30, of Louisville, Ky., is accused of driving drunk on Nov. 22, police said.

Police said Perez later admitted to losing control of his vehicle in the area of Newark and Sunnydell Roads, where police said they found damage to a street sign, utility pole, and two yards through which the defendant had driven. Perez was released pending a summons from district court, police said.

On Friday, Nov. 22, 2013 at 2:58 p.m., New Garden officers to a two-vehicle property damage accident at Baltimore Pike and Chambers Road, police said. Upon contact with the driver of the striking vehicle, police said they detected an odor of an alcoholic beverage. Dennis Perkins, 30, of Louisville, Ky., admitted to drinking and showed signs of impairment during roadside sobriety tests, police said.

Perkins was taken into custody for suspected drunken-driving, and during a subsequent search, police said they found 14 Xanax pills in his possession. He was arraigned and transported to Chester County Prison after failing to post $5,000 cash bail, police said.
