{"id":11075,"date":"2014-03-03T12:58:14","date_gmt":"2014-03-03T17:58:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=11075"},"modified":"2014-03-03T13:11:24","modified_gmt":"2014-03-03T18:11:24","slug":"storm-skirts-south-largely-sparing-county","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=11075","title":{"rendered":"Storm skirts south, largely sparing county"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium;\"><em><strong>Four school districts close, but storm&#8217;s impact less than feared<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong>By Mike McGann<\/strong>, <span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><em>Editor, The Times<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_737319\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/MarketStSnow.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-737319\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-737319\" style=\"margin: 4px; border: 2px solid black;\" alt=\"MarketStSnow\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/MarketStSnow.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"272\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-737319\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Market Street in West Chester was largely clear by mid-morning Monday, but many sidestreets \u2014 particularly in the southern part of the county has slippery patches \u2014 as the turned out be less severe than originally forecast.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Chester County appears to have been spared the worst of a late-winter storm \u2014 which hammered the nation\u2019s capital, but appears to have dropped only a few inches of snow, with the highest accumulations in the southern portion of the county.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the early forecasts of a major snow event, the bulk of the heavy snowfall happened to the south of the area, with Washington, D.C., Richmond, Va. and Baltimore getting hit hard.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Most of the snow had stopped across the county around noon, but a small line of snow showers was expected in the early afternoon, but no appreciable accumulation was expected.<\/p>\n<p>Four school districts, Unionville-Chadds Ford, Kennett Consolidated, Oxford and Octorara closed school Monday, with the rest running on delayed opening schedules. Chester County offices opened on a two-hour delay.<\/p>\n<p>While most county roads were passable by midday Monday, there were a number of icy spots \u2014 and authorities reported a handful of accidents. Icy conditions will be a concern throughout tonight as the area undergoes a deep freeze, with the overnight temperatures expected to hover around zero, according to the National Weather Service.<\/p>\n<p>Most municipal snow emergencies expired by noon.<\/p>\n<p>As of midday Monday, PECO was reporting no power outages in the county.<\/p>\n<p>On the positive note, the NWS expects moderating weather after tonight\u2019s deep freeze, although there is a chance of wintry mix next Sunday.
