{"id":1311,"date":"2011-09-29T14:17:44","date_gmt":"2011-09-29T18:17:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=1311"},"modified":"2011-09-29T14:17:44","modified_gmt":"2011-09-29T18:17:44","slug":"local-cross-country-teams-kick-into-high-gear","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=1311","title":{"rendered":"Local cross country teams kick into high gear"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: medium;\"><em><strong>Kennett, Unionville teams compete at Hershey <\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong>By Hannah Christopher<\/strong>, <span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><em>Staff Writer, KennettTimes.com<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1322\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?attachment_id=1322\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1322\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1322\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1322 \" style=\"margin: 4px; border: 2px solid blue;\" title=\"Simonsen\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Simonsen-300x286.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"286\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Simonsen-300x286.jpg 300w, https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Simonsen.jpg 747w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1322\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kennett Middle School runner Naomi Simonsen in recent action.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Last Saturday the Unionville and Kennett cross country teams competed in Hershey, PA in the PIAA Foundation Invitational.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It is a great opportunity for the teams to experience, some for the first time, the State Championship course in Hershey.<\/p>\n<p>Unionville varsity girls placed second as a team to Pennsbury in the Varsity Gold Division which had 31 teams competing.\u00a0 The Kennett girls placed 29<sup>th<\/sup> as a team and the Kennett boys placed 14<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 The Unionville varsity boys placed behind Kennett in the 18 spot out of 33 teams.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Individually Unionville was lead by the second place finish overall by Courtney Smith in a 19:12 over the challenging 5000 meter course.\u00a0 She was second to Sara Sargent a former PA state champion.\u00a0\u00a0 Smith, who is only a sophomore, is competing for the first time this year for the Indians cc team.\u00a0 She is a former soccer standout who has switched over to long distance running and obviously is having great success with her decision.\u00a0 Other top scorers for the \u201cU\u201d were Annie Birkenmaier, Gretchen Mills, Olivia Young and Emily Fisher.\u00a0 Young and Mills are only freshmen so stay tuned for more news on this very strong girls team.\u00a0 They are coached by physics professor Mark Lacianca who really knows how to whip kids into shape and\u00a0 his specialty is to know how to get them to peak when it counts, at the high school states.<\/p>\n<p>Jared Murphy was the first Unionville boy\u2019s varsity runner to cross the line in 60<sup>th<\/sup> place.\u00a0 The second Unionville boy was junior Steven Yannocone in 72<sup>nd<\/sup> place.<\/p>\n<p>The Kennett girls were lead by Lisa Finfrock who finished in 95<sup>th<\/sup> place.\u00a0 The Kennett varsity boys had a 48<sup>th<\/sup> and 49<sup>th<\/sup> finish by Angel Chimal and Evan Jones, a sophomore.\u00a0 They both ran 18:12 on the hilly course.\u00a0 Chimal was the second place overall finisher at this years Mushroom Festival 5k.\u00a0 He was second place to Paul Springer, former Unionville star runner and recent Notre Dame Graduate.<\/p>\n<p>Kennett\u2019s program is developing and they are working hard on building their program under the leadership of John Ramagano.\u00a0 I expect like their football team that cross country will also be soon one of the teams to beat.<\/p>\n<p>The junior varsity teams fared well on Saturday.\u00a0 The Unionville girls placed first out of 23 teams with a 22:47 average time. Jillian Jaycox was the overall winner in a 21:39 which would have put her in top 40 for varsity, and Melissa Talley was third. Erin Menninger was 9<sup>th<\/sup> overall, who is another transfer athlete from volleyball that joined the cc team.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0The Unionville boys placed 11<sup>th<\/sup> as a team with Colin McDonald a sophomore placing 47<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 McDonald is just coming off a recent foot injury and is working his way back to top form.<\/p>\n<p>In other running news at the middle school level we had a Unionville, Kennett and Great Valley tri meet on Tuesday at Patton Middle school.\u00a0 The boys and girls run 2 miles and there was a fantastic atmosphere of camaraderie between all of the kids.\u00a0 Alex Wilkins, who is in \u00a0the 8<sup>th<\/sup> grade placed first overall for the boys and was at least a quarter of a mile ahead of all his competition.\u00a0 Alex runs effortlessly and it is obvious he loves the sport.<\/p>\n<p>For the girls Anna Willig won from Great Valley and came from behind to beat out Elizabeth Edwards from Patton middle school.\u00a0 The Great Valley boys and girls won both team titles over Patton and Kennett.\u00a0 I recommend going to digitalsports.com and finding out when the next home meet is and to come out and cheer for all of the kids who give it their best effort.\u00a0\u00a0 Each of the schools\u2019 teams cheered everyone to the finish and gave them words of encouragement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kennett, Unionville teams compete at Hershey By Hannah Christopher, Staff Writer, KennettTimes.com Last Saturday the Unionville and Kennett cross country teams competed in Hershey, PA in the PIAA Foundation Invitational.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It is a great opportunity for the teams to experience, some for the first time, the State Championship course in Hershey.
