The Blue Demons celebrated Homecoming 2011 by posting their fifth win \u2014 making a losing record in 2011 impossible.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">KENNETT SQUARE \u2014 Losers, no more.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Since Kennett High School restarted its football program in the fall of the 2005, the team has lost more games than it won each and every year, racking up a 20-43 record coming into the 2011 season. That streak is over, now.<\/p>\n<p>Celebrating\u00a0 <span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Homecoming 2011 with a nail-biter, a 14-12 win, over Octorara, the Demons now have five wins (5-3) and need only a win over Oxford next week or against Unionville in the season finale to have a winning season \u2014 but already a losing season is out the window with a .500 record now the worst-case scenario.<!--more--><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Second year head coach Scott Green is largely responsible for the turnaround of the Kennett program which struggled to find an identity and suffered from a dismal\u00a0performance in seasons past. Now the Demons are genuine contenders \u2014 still on the fringes of the District 1 playoff picture \u2014\u00a0 but Green remains humble about his efforts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">\u201cI didn\u2019t even realize that [the new record] before the game started,\u201d Green said \u201cOur goal was to have a winning season and be the first team to do that, but certainly to know that we\u2019re the first Kennett team to have five wins, it makes us all feel good.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1598\" style=\"width: 261px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?attachment_id=1598\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1598\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1598\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1598\" style=\"border: 2px solid blue; margin: 4px;\" title=\"KennOcto\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/KennOcto-251x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"251\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/KennOcto-251x300.jpg 251w, https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/KennOcto.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 251px) 100vw, 251px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1598\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kennett&#39;s C.J. Lowe looks for an opening.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">But more than likely it was because of Kennett\u2019s staunch defensive effort and an equally serious Octorara defense.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">After having their QB sacked on a first down, the Braves scored the first touchdown of the game, the ball\u00a0heaved toward the end zone via Hail Mary. The catch was luck more than anything, as the wild pass had the wind at its back and several Demon defenders racing toward the receiver. The subsequent attempt at a two point conversion was halted by Kennett, starting the game with a 0-6 score.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">A\u00a0notable rushing effort by Malik Rochester brought\u00a0the Demons\u00a0into good scoring range early in the second. Anthony Torello was able to find an opening in the Braves\u2019 line and cruise in for Kennett\u2019s first TD. A solid kick from Brett Rose edged the Demons into the lead, 7-6.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Every successive Octorara drive was met with a stern bulldozing from the increasingly potent Kennett defensive line, pushing hordes of Braves back to\u00a0force negative yardage and several sacks on the quarterback.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1595\" style=\"width: 303px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?attachment_id=1595\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1595\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1595\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1595 \" style=\"border: 2px solid blue; margin: 4px;\" title=\"KennOcto-3\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/KennOcto-3-293x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"293\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/KennOcto-3-293x300.jpg 293w, https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/KennOcto-3.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 293px) 100vw, 293px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1595\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kennett&#39;s Barry Tomasetti Jr. races right for yards against Octorara.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">On the following Kennett possesion, and a 60 yard rush from Jordan Lardani, Torello was in prime position to score another touchdown, mere seconds before halftime. The extra point was good, making the score 14-6 at the half.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">With the third quarter scoreless, it was up to Octorara to make an aggressive turn in strategy in the fourth in order to salvage the game. They succeeded: late in the quarter, the Braves managed to inflict a second touchdown on the Demons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">It was clear to everyone that Octorara was going to gamble on a two point conversion. But despite their last minute drive, they were no match for Kennett\u2019s defense, and with the thwarted attempt, Kennett secured victory on Homecoming Day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">\u201cWe made big plays at big times,\u201d Green said \u201cThey went the length of the field and they could have easily tied it up when they went for two but our defense came up with a big stop. We made our extra points, we played well on special teams, we did a good job offensively\u2014I wish we would\u2019ve scored a few more points\u2014but we still came through offensively.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">With Oxford looming in the distance, questions were floating around the field concerning Kennett\u2019s playoff contention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">\u201cI\u2019m not sure about the playoffs,\u201d Green said \u201cI know we would have to win out\u2026if we get one step closer by focusing on Oxford then\u00a0that\u2019s what we\u2019re going to do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Blue Demons fought their way to a win Saturday while also setting a KHS record.
