KENNETT SQUARE \u2013 The run\u2019s now iconic theme \u2018Small town, BIG race & Strong Community\u2019 certainly captured the feel of 26th annual Kennett Run Saturday morning. Thousands gathered amidst the backdrop of charming historic Kennett Square to run, walk or cheer for family and friends.<\/p>\n

Post race recognition of some individual category top runners<\/p><\/div>\n

To date, the run has raised more than $1,000,000 for local schools and charities through gift and in kind donations. It continues to gain momentum annually; keeping a steady footing and maintaining an impressive endurance that has enabled it to stay true to its original goals.<\/p>\n

The run got its start in 1989 when Rotary Club of Kennett Square member, Michael R. Perna, suggested that Rotary board that it join forces with other Kennett area service clubs to host an event with some clearly defined goals.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

According to the Kennett Run\u2019s website, the original and now time-tested run goals were:
\n\u2022The achievement of sustainable camaraderie among Kennett area service organizations and citizens, and the fostering of an esprit de corps among the ethnically, economically, and occupationally diverse groups that comprise our community.
\n\u2022The establishment of a fundraising vehicle that would net ever-increasing sums for expenditure to promote the general well-being and civic betterment of Kennett area residents, organizations and projects; and
\n\u2022The showcasing of the town of Kennett Square and its environs by drawing participants and spectators from the region, the nation and perhaps even the world.<\/p>\n

With a focus on fellowship that the race has come to represent, many could be witnessed holding hands, carrying a child and cheering both the youngest and oldest of runners as they crossed the finish line. Beloved Kennett Area YMCA staff member, Joe Hector’s, memory was honored as his loved ones carried his photo and ran ‘with’ Joe the entire time.<\/p>\n

Kennett Run board member, Heather Connolly and Race Director, Nadiene Ringler-Friedrich kick off the festivities.<\/p><\/div>\n

Race goers had the option to compete in a 5K or 10K Run, 5K \u2018PoweRun\u2019 or 1 mile walk; and were treated to a scenic route that included borough streets and the lush trails of Anson B. Nixon Park. Following the run, participants and their supporters gathered for refreshments and award ceremony.
