{"id":16620,"date":"2015-07-16T10:16:16","date_gmt":"2015-07-16T14:16:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=16620"},"modified":"2015-07-16T09:27:41","modified_gmt":"2015-07-16T13:27:41","slug":"on-stage-nalani-serina-poised-for-the-big-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=16620","title":{"rendered":"On Stage: Nalani &amp; Serina poised for the big time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><em><strong>Also,\u00a0Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival tops bill for local events<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>By Denny Dyroff<\/strong><\/span>,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Staff Writer, The Times<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1144774\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/nalani-sarina33-2-300x225.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1144774\" class=\"wp-image-1144774 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/nalani-sarina33-2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"nalani &amp; sarina33 2\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1144774\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rising twin sister act Nalani &amp; Sarina play the Fourth Annual Ladybug Music Festival this weekend.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Over the years, I\u2019ve seen many memorable concerts including the Who playing \u201cTommy\u201d at Woodstock with the sun rising behind the stage and Jimi Hendrix almost blowing the roof off the original Electric Factory with a wall of Marshall amps blaring out \u201cAre You Experienced.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Then, there were other memorable concerts that were special for another reason &#8212; not just for the stellar music but for the glimpse of potential greatness they presented.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Some of the shows in this category were the Doors, a little-known band from L.A., performing \u201cLight My Fire at Philadelphia\u2019s Town Hall in 1967; a young rocker named Bruce Springsteen playing \u201cSpirits in the Night\u201d at the Main Point in Bryn Mawr in 1973; and a new Irish band named U2 treating a handful of fans to a spirited rendition of \u201cI Will Follow\u201d at The Ripley in Philadelphia in 1981.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">You\u2019ve probably had similar experiences when you saw a relatively unknown act perform &#8212; maybe as an opening act for one of your favorites &#8212; and came away thinking \u201cI just saw greatness in the making. I just saw an act that is destined to hit the big time.\u201d<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Lately, music fans in the area have been getting those thoughts after watching Nalani &amp; Sarina perform. There is no guarantee for fame but the twin sisters have it all &#8212; great musicianship, talented songwriting, amazing vocals and an abundance of charisma.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If you want to hear Nalani &amp; Sarina play in a small, comfortable setting where their performance is upfront and accessible, you can do it on July 16 when they will be one of the featured performers at the Fourth Annual Ladybug Music Festival (<a href=\"http:\/\/theladybugfestival.com\/\"><span class=\"s2\">theladybugfestival.com<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The free event, which will be held in the 2<\/span><span class=\"s3\"><sup>nd<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0&amp; LoMa neighborhood along Market Street downtown Wilmington on July 17, is a block party that will run from 5-10 p.m. and feature 40 talented music acts \u2014 all female.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This year, Third Street and the outdoor courtyard of Del Tech will also have vendors and live music. The music will begin around 5 p.m. and will be nonstop on multiple stages until 10 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Nalani &amp; Sarina &#8212; twin sisters Nalani and Sarina Bolton &#8212; are seasoned musicians even though they just turned 21. They are vocalists, songwriters, multi-instrumentalists who know how to rock, write insightful melodic songs and how to get their funk on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The sisters just released a new EP tiles \u201cScattered World.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe did a lot of pre-production at Julian Herzfeld\u2019s studio in Wayne,\u201d said Nalani, during a recent phone interview. \u201cAfter we released our last album &#8212; \u2018Lessons Learned\u2019 &#8212; we just continued to write. We started making demos with Julian last summer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThen, we worked on demos ourselves and also with Greg Drew. Greg started off as our vocal coach when we were 16 and just getting started. He\u2019s always looked out for us and has been our manager for the last three years.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Sarina said, \u201cWe tested all the new songs before we recorded them. We\u2019ve learned that the best way to test a song is by the audience\u2019s reaction. Another test is the way it feels to us as we\u2019re playing it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIf a song works out well live then we know it\u2019s a good song to record. We go with the mentality that you have to have 10 songs to get one good one. We\u2019re really hard on ourselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe just go and see where a song will take us. We want the song to direct the production. The band that we used in the studio really helped with how the songs sound on the album. We are huge fans of groove and funk and it shows on the new record.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Nalani added, \u00a0\u201cThey\u2019re all new songs \u2014 all of them written in the last six months. We had a new approach this time. The songs on our last album were based on personal experiences. This time, it\u2019s other people\u2019s stories \u2014 more of a world-wide approach.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">With roots based in rhythm-and-blues, soul and rock, the sisters create vocal harmonies that only twins can make.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe\u2019re sonically alike and there is this telepathy,\u201d said Sarina. \u201cWe\u2019ll be singing a new song and when one of us gravitates to a harmony, the other knows exactly where to go. We\u2019ve been singing together ever since we were three. Being twin sisters, there was nothing else to do. We started singing professionally when we were 15.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019ve definitely become more comfortable in the studio. We\u2019ve gotten used to the studio environment and gotten better with how to handle vocals. We try to recreate how they\u2019re done live. We really emphasized on making vocals different so they can relate to the stories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Nalani &amp; Sarina have been making music together for a long time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe\u2019re identical twins,\u201d said Nalani. \u201cWe graduated early from Hunterdon Central High a few years ago and we\u2019ve been doing music ever since. Actually, we both started playing classical piano when were six and then studied operatic vocals when we were in sixth grade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cClassical music and opera provided good basics for us. Our mom was a folkie so we listened to a lot of folk music when we were young \u2014 great songwriters like Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan. And, we\u2019ve listened to a lot of classic rock.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Nalani &amp; Sarina, who perform mainly as a duo, list acoustic guitar, piano and ukulele as their main instruments. In their live shows, they even do a ukulele duet of AC\/DC\u2019s \u201cHighway to Hell.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe really love playing live,\u201d said Nalani. \u201cWe\u2019d play eight days a week if we could. We\u2019ve been doing a lot more full band shows lately. Fortunately for the band\u2019s fans, four of the original five are back in the fold &#8212; Tyler Dennen (vocals), Eugene Kamlyuk (guitar, backing vocals), Zakary Gibson (guitar, backing vocals) and George. Derek Bolman is the current bass player.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cSworn In got started in 2011,\u201d said Dennen, during a recent phone interview from a tour stop in Milwaukee. \u201cWe all were in school together in Illinois.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The band got its start while the members were still attending high school and played its first show in March 2011. The following month, Sworn In released its first EP \u201cCatharsis.\u201d Then, Dennen left the band and Kamlyuk fronted the band and recorded vocals for Sworn In\u2019s second EP \u201cStart\/End,\u201d which was released in 2012.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOur first tour was in 2012,\u201d said Dennen. \u201cFrom then on, it\u2019s been relentless touring. We signed with our manager Jeff in 2013 and that\u2019s when it became full-time. The signing of a record deal with Razor &amp; Tie came later. We made our first album \u2018The Death Card\u2019 totally on our own and then shopped it around.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1144778\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/sworn-in-300x200.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1144778\" class=\"wp-image-1144778 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/sworn-in-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"sworn in\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1144778\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sworn In<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe made the album in Nashville at 456 Recordings with producer Brian Hood. Zak was into his mixes and knew he was a good producer. Brian had a good handle on what we wanted. We made the money to record the album through touring and our merch (merchandise) table. We\u2019ve always been a good merch band so that was what we used.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe Death Card\u201d was released on Razor &amp; Tie in August 2013.\u00a0 Sworn In\u2019s sophomore album \u201cThe Lovers\/The Devil\u201d came out on Razor &amp; Tie on April 7, 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe made the second album with producer Will Putney at The Machine Shop Studio in North Jersey,\u201d said Dennen. \u201cZak picked this one too. He has pretty good insight into studios\u2019 sounds and producers. We always trust what he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe didn\u2019t do much pre-production for the album. We worked a lot of the songs on the computer using Guitar Pro. Then, we went into the studio for a month. After that, we went on our first headlining tour. We started in Las Vegas and went east, north, west and south before we came home.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Now, Sworn In is on tour with an all-star line-up that includes Slayer, King Diamond, Hellyeah, Devil Wears Prada, Jungle Rot, Sister Sin, Shattered Sun, Thy Art Is Murder, Feed Her to the Sharks, Code Orange and Kissing Candice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe only get to play a 25-minute set,\u201d said Dennen. \u201cIt\u2019s tough. But, it\u2019s kind of relieving because there is less pressure. We do the same set list every night &#8212; a good mix of old and new.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe brainstormed a lot. We wanted to make sure that we had enough material to appease our fans and appeal to a metal (music) crowd. The group eventually added Branden Campbell (bass guitar, vocals) and Elaine Bradley (drums, percussion, vocals) to form its current lineup.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Neon Treees has released three albums in the last four years &#8212; \u201cHabits\u201d in 2010, \u201cPicture Show\u201d in 2012 and \u201cPop Psychology\u201d in 2014.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe did one tour for \u2018Pop Psychology\u2019 right after it came out last April,\u201d said Campbell, during a recent phone interview from a tour stop in San Francisco. \u201cWe were going to do another one last fall. But, I got sick and we had to cancel the tour.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Saying that he got sick is putting it mildly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI had open heart surgery,\u201d said Campbell. \u201cThen, I went back to work too soon and there were complications. I was born with an aortic valve that was messed-up &#8212; a bicuspid valve.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A bicuspid aortic valve is an aortic valve that only has two leaflets, instead of three. The aortic valve regulates blood flow from the heart into the aorta, the major blood vessel that brings blood to the body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cEverything is fine now,\u201d said Campbell. \u201cSo, we\u2019re going out on a tour featuring fan-friendly venues. We bill it as \u201can intimate evening with Neon Trees.\u2019 We\u2019re going back to the rooms we played in 2011.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe recorded \u2018Pop Psychology\u2019 in summer 2013 &#8212; a lot of it in Provo and a bit in North Hollywood. We have our own rehearsal studio where we do some of our recording. In North Hollywood, we recorded with Tim Pagnotta. He produced our first album and wrote \u2018Animal\u2019 with us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The \u201cHabit\u201d album\u2019s lead single \u201cAnimal\u201d was featured in several commercials, including those for Camp Vegas. The single reached Number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100\u00a0 and Number 1 on the Alternative Rock chart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWith \u2018Pop Psychology,\u2019 a lot of it is about Tyler\u2019s \u2018coming out\u2019 &#8212; coming to grips with his identity as a gay man and dealing with that in a modern age. At first, he wasn\u2019t sure that he wanted to share that with the world. Eventually, he realized that he had to be honest with himself and live carefree.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThere is a lot of musical influence from the early 80s and what was being played on MTV at the time. It\u2019s fun.
