The Goshen Country Fair is one of the area’s longest-running and most beloved fairs.<\/p><\/div>\n

This is the time of the year for outdoor festivals. Every summer, this area is a hotbed for festivals — blueberry festivals, peach festivals, county fairs, firemen\u2019s festivals, state fairs and plain old country fairs.<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the best — and longest-running — is the annual Goshen Country Fair (Goshen Fairgrounds, Park Avenue, East Goshen, 610- 430-1554, www.goshencountryfair.org<\/span><\/a>). The fair, which is celebrating its 66th anniversary this season, will run from July 27-August 1 at the Goshen Fairgrounds, which are located just off West Chester Pike three miles east of West Chester.<\/span><\/p>\n

The free family-oriented event is held each year as a benefit for the Goshen Fire Company. It will open at 6 p.m. from Monday through Friday and at 5 p.m. on Saturday.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is an authentic down-home country fair with all the agricultural events found at most traditional country fairs, including competitions each night at 6 p.m. — cows on July 28, goats on July 29, rabbits on July 30, Holstein and Lineback cows on July 31 and sheep on August 1.<\/span><\/p>\n

The fair will also feature competitions for bread, cookies, flowering houseplants, cakes, flower arrangements, pies, vegetables, jams and jellies, specimen flowers and candy. Nightly attractions include live music performances, tug-of-war competitions and pie-eating contests.<\/span><\/p>\n

The schedule for live music includes Southern Edge on July 27, Tom\u2019s Attic on July 28, Swing Kings on July 29, Charlie Gracie on July 30, Rob Snyder on July 31 and CC Lawmen on August 1.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"kimberton<\/a>

The Kimberton Fair is another of Chester County’s great summer events.<\/p><\/div>\n

If you enjoy country fairs, you can also check out the 87<\/span>th<\/sup><\/span> Annual Kimberton Community Fair (Kimberton Fairgrounds, Route 113, Kimberton, 610-933-4566, http:\/\/kimbertonfair.org<\/span><\/a>) which is running now through July 25.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Kimberton Community Fair, which was first staged in 1929, is one of the oldest community fairs in the state \u2014 and one of the last \u201cfree admission\u201d fairs operating in the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs. The Kimberton Fair is a \u201cfree admission fair with parking by donation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

As always, the fair offers a huge array of free attractions \u2014 a festive midway with amusement rides, live entertainment shows, nightly contests, exhibit buildings and livestock displays.<\/span><\/p>\n

The fair will be held at the Kimberton Fairgrounds on Route 113 approximately one mile south of Phoenixville. The non-profit event, which lists the volunteer Kimberton Fire Company as its beneficiary, attracts over 60,000 people each year.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are competitions in \u201cYouth\u201d and \u201cAdult\u201d categories for sewing, needlecraft, arts and crafts, vegetables, horticulture, herbs, hay and grain, photography, honey and maple syrup, baking, homemade wines and beers and furniture-making.<\/span><\/p>\n

There will also be open class and 4-H competitions for \u201cDairy Cattle,\u201d \u201cDairy Goats,\u201d \u201cBreeding Sheep\u201d and \u201cMarket Steer\u201d livestock. Competitions will be staged nightly.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Kimberton Fair is a \u201crain-or-shine\u201d event \u2013more or less.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the event\u2019s website, they never officially \u201cclose\u201d the fair as a result of rain because they must remain \u201copen\u201d to adhere to Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture operating guidelines. The indoor attractions stay open even in inclement weather but the festival may shut down any amusement ride if the weather causes safety issues.<\/span><\/p>\n

This weekend\u2019s event calendar also includes the Insta-Con Pop Culture Convention in Kennett Square.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Insta-Con Pop Culture Convention will be held on July 25 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Kennett Public Library (East State Street, Kennett Square, 610-444-2702, http:\/\/kplteens.wix.com\/insta-con-2015<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n

The free, family-oriented event is billed as a \u201cpop-up pop culture convention\u201d being held at the library. Insta-Con is a full-fledged pop culture happening that will completely take over the library with special guests, panels, talks, games and more.<\/span><\/p>\n

This year\u2019s event will feature comic book author Greg Pak (Batman\/Superman, Storm, Turok), comic book illustrator Brooke Allen (Lumberjanes), author\/illustrator Annie Mok, artist\/writer Sean Dillon and cartoonist Luke Foster.<\/span><\/p>\n

Show attendees can dress up in whatever manner suits them. Cosplay is encouraged and the event will even feature a special cosplay contest.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Fiddler-Color\"<\/a>The hit musical \u201cFiddler on the Roof\u201d is a classic — a show that audiences return to over and over again and never get tired of watching.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fans will have another chance to revisit the timeless piece by visiting Longwood Gardens (Route 1, Kennett Square, 610-388-1000, www.longwoodgardens.org<\/span><\/a>) on July 24, 25, 30 or 31 or August 1. Brandywiners, Ltd. will perform the award-winning musical at 8 p.m. each night in Longwood\u2019s beautiful Open Air Theatre.<\/span><\/p>\n

Every summer, the company presents a large-scale musical production at Longwood Gardens and contributes the proceeds to cultural, educational and civic causes throughout the Delaware Valley.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fiddler on the Roof\u201d takes a look at Jewish history and has an amazing amount of history on its own. The musical, which is set in Russia in the early 1900s, tells the story of Tevye, his wife Golde and three of their daughters — Tzeitel, Hodel and Chava.<\/span><\/p>\n

It just over 50 years ago that the timeless musical opened on Broadway. The inaugural performance took place on September 22, 1964 at the\u00a0Imperial Theatre. It\u00a0ran for a record-setting total of 3,242 performances\u00a0and was the first musical theater run in history to surpass 3,000 performances.<\/span><\/p>\n

The musical, which is based on Sholom Aleichem\u2019s short story \u201cTevye\u2019s Daughters\u201d, is set in 1905 in Anatevka, a small Ukrainian Jewish village in Russia. It tells the story of Tevye\u2019s attempts to maintain his family and\u00a0Jewish\u00a0religious traditions during challenging times.<\/span><\/p>\n

His three older daughters are headstrong and willing to challenge tradition with their choices of husbands \u2014 Tzeitel with a poor young man from the village, Hodel with an idealistic freedom fighter and Chava with a Russian soldier.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tickets for the Brandywiners, Ltd. production include admission to Longwood Gardens beginning at 9 a.m. on the day of performance as well as a spectacular fountain display immediately following the show. Tickets are $30 for adults, $25 for students (ages 13-21) and $15 for children (ages 12 and under).<\/span><\/p>\n

July is National Hot Dog Month and July 23 is National Hot Dog Day. Even better, July is National Ice Cream Month.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1984, the United States Senate passed a resolution that proclaimed the month of July National Ice Cream Month. It was signed into law by President\u00a0Ronald Reagan\u00a0on July 9, 1984 with\u00a0Presidential Proclamation\u00a05219.<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the passages Reagan wrote in the proclamation was \u201cNow, Therefore, I, Ronald Reagan,\u00a0President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim July 1984 as National Ice Cream Month and July 15, 1984, as National Ice Cream Day, and I call upon the people of the United States to observe these events with appropriate ceremonies and activities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Itching to celebrate National Ice Cream Month? Join the folks at Springton Manor.<\/p><\/div>\n

Once again, the Friends of Springton Manor are holding a special event to celebrate the special month. On July 26, the \u201cFriends\u201d of the historic site just west of Downingtown will host an \u201cIce Cream Social\u201d at Springton Manor (860 Springton Road, Glenmoore, 610-942-2450, http:\/\/dsf.chesco.org\/ccparks<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n

The summertime party, which will be held in the Manor House at Springton Manor, is scheduled to run from 1-3 p.m. It is a free, family-oriented event presented annually at the park.<\/span><\/p>\n

Visitors are invited to kick back and enjoy a slow-paced afternoon at the park. Special activities include the playing of Victorian games, learning about the history of\u00a0<\/span>Springton Manor Farm<\/span>\u00a0and making ice cream.<\/span><\/p>\n

Live performances of drum and bugle shows, which include music and marching, are another popular summertime tradition in America.<\/span><\/p>\n

Drum Corp Associates presents the Downingtown Classic July 25.<\/p><\/div>\n

On July 25, DCA (Drum Corps Associates) will present the \u201cDowningtown Classic\u201d at 7 p.m. at <\/span>Downingtown West High School\u2019s Stadium (445 Manor Avenue, Downingtown, 610-929-4654, http:\/\/www.downingtownclassic.com<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n

The event, which is sponsored by the Reading Buccaneers, will feature seven talented DCA corps — Bushwackers, Cadets 2, Excelsior, Hurricanes, Skyliners, White Sabers and Buccaneers. There will also be a special exhibition by the United States Marine Silent Drill Platoon.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tickets are $20 for reserved seating and $17 for general admission.<\/span><\/p>\n

On\u00a0July 30, seven of the world\u2019s top competitive drum and bugle corps will be appearing at PPL Park (1 Stadium Drive, Chester, 610.821.0345) as part of the DCI (Drum Corps International) Tour of Champions Grand Finale.<\/span><\/p>\n

Featured in the competition which is part of the eight-event nationwide DCI Tour of Champions Series will be the 10-time World Champion Cadets from Allentown (PA), the 16-time World Champions Blue Devils of Concord (CA), the seven-time World Champion The Cavaliers of Rosemont (IL), the 2013 World Champion Carolina Crown of Fort Mill (SC), the two-time World Champion Phantom Regiment of Rockford (IL), the six-time World Champion Santa Clara Vanguard of Santa Clara (CA) and the Bluecoats of Canton (OH).<\/span><\/p>\n

The participating ensembles feature members under the age of 22 who are proficient in three categories — brass, percussion and color guard\/dance. Each group performs a 12-minute production based on a wide variety of musical styles.<\/span><\/p>\n

The \u201cDCI Tour of Champions Grand Finale\u201d begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $30 for Reserved, $50 for Premium Reserved, $75 for Super Premium and $125 exclusive VIP seating. The Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen is staging one of its biggest and oldest annual craft fairs this weekend — but, ironically, not in Pennsylvania. The Guild presents several craft fairs throughout the Keystone State each year, including the Annual State Craft Fair — an event that had its origin almost 70 years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n

A few years ago, the Guild\u2019s popular mid-summer fair moved from Lancaster to Wilmington\u2019s Riverfront. It\u2019s still the biggest and oldest but it now is known as the Pennsylvania Guild Fine Craft Fair.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 2015 Pennsylvania Guild Fine Craft Fair (717-431-8706, www.pacrafts.org<\/span><\/a>) features 192 top-flight crafters from all over the Mid-Atlantic region. It will be held on July 26 and 27 at the Chase Center on the Riverfront, which is located on Justison Street in Wilmington, Delaware.<\/span><\/p>\n

This indoor shopping experience boasts a unique\u00a0array of beautiful items that are all handmade in America, ranging from one-of-a-kind clothing, jewelry, ceramics, glass, sculpture, artisan furniture and more.<\/span><\/p>\n

The list of participants from the area includes Kennett Square\u2019s Liberty Chair Works (wood), Lincoln University\u2019s KC Art Clay (clay), Glenmoore\u2019s Leni Hoch Design (fiber), Oxford\u2019s Golden Touch Gifts (wood), Atglen\u2019s Anne St. Clair \u00a0(clay) and Exton\u2019s Fulton Design Studio (fiber).<\/span><\/p>\n

Also featured are Landenburg\u2019s Caryn L. Hetherston Designs (jewelry), Chadds Ford\u2019s Ree Gallagher (jewelry), Phoenixville\u2019s French Creek Decoy Shop (wood), Toughkenamon\u2019s Thomasvon Koch (glass), Oxford\u2019s Eldreth Designs (jewelry) and Landisville\u2019s Keysha Koy Studios (glass).<\/span><\/p>\n

As an added attraction, there will be a number of demonstrations presented by a diverse group of featured artists both days. Show hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on July 25 and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on July 26. Tickets are $8 for adults. Children (under 16) will be admitted free. There will also be free parking.<\/span><\/p>\n

On July 25, the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center (100 Station Road, Oaks, 610-529-3614, www.eastcoastreptilesuperexpos.com<\/span><\/a>) will host the East Coast Reptile Super Expo from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 with children (under five) admitted free.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you think snakes and lizards are creepy — stay away. If you think they are interesting creatures and\/or potential pets, you should attend this show.\u00a0 A wide array of reptiles will be on display as part of the popular exhibition.<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the show\u2019s most popular attractions is a sales exhibit area featuring a large number of vendors with live reptiles, amphibians and arachnids as well as food items, supplies, books, cages, and related accessories.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fort Mifflin on the Delaware (Fort Mifflin Road and Hog Island Road, Philadelphia,<\/span> 215-685-4167, http:\/\/fortmifflin.us<\/span><\/a>) offers a variety of special events throughout the year. On July 25, the special event will be \u201cAirplane Day @The Fort.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Visitors to the Fort will be able to watch planes from nearby Philadelphia International Airport as they ascend on take-offs and descend on landings — and find out why they built Fort Mifflin so close to a major airport.<\/span><\/p>\n

Participants in the day\u2019s activities will be able to learn the basics of flight, build their own gliders and explore the use of aircraft in warfare and anti-aircraft defenses. Fort Mifflin actually held anti-aircraft guns during World War II.<\/span><\/p>\n

Airplane Day @The Fort\u201d will run from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors (age 65 and older) and $6 for veterans (with ID) and students (age 12 and under).<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the most popular annual events at the Landis Valley Museum (2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, 717-569-0401, www.landisvalleymuseum.org<\/span><\/a>) is \u201cCivil War Days.\u201d The fun and educational event, which will be held on July 25 and 26, takes visitors back into an era when America\u2019s northern states waged war with states from the south.<\/span><\/p>\n

In light of current events, the Confederate troops might have greater incentive to defend their flag this year.<\/span><\/p>\n

The museum\u2019s grounds in Lancaster will be the site of a Civil War era village.<\/span><\/p>\n

Additionally, the site will host a large number of authentically dressed military and civilian re-enactors in a variety of roles such as merchants, members of aid societies, craftsmen and townsfolk. Some of the featured activities are company drills, weapon firing demonstrations, musket drills and a cavalry demonstration.<\/span><\/p>\n

Landis Valley Museum is a living history village dedicated to collecting, preserving and interpreting the history and culture of the Pennsylvania German community from 1740-1940. Admission tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and $8 for youth (ages 3-11).<\/span><\/p>\n
