{"id":16983,"date":"2015-09-02T10:15:13","date_gmt":"2015-09-02T14:15:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=16983"},"modified":"2015-09-02T10:03:06","modified_gmt":"2015-09-02T14:03:06","slug":"pa-state-police-host-free-camp-cadet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=16983","title":{"rendered":"PA State Police host free &#8216;Camp Cadet&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><em><strong>Chesco kids seek achievement, growth and pride<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">By Kim Chiomento<\/span>,<\/strong> <span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><em>News Editor, The Times<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>AVONDALE\u2013 The Pennsylvania\u00a0State Police, \u00a0Avondale Barracks recently hosted its\u00a0free, week-long &#8216;Camp Cadet&#8217;\u00a0for approximately 120 Chester County youth.\u00a0 Founded locally in 1971, this annual mid-August event partners both local and state law enforcement to provide positive life skills, foster relationships with law enforcement, and also provide a traditional summer camp experience for 11 &#8211; 13 year olds from across the county. The camp is state-wide; but is organized and fund-raised for on a county by county basis.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Camp Saginaw, Oxford, is home to\u00a0the Chester County Camp Cadet experience.\u00a0 Troopers and other specially selected representatives from law enforcement, both male and female, donate a full week of their time to serve as camp counselors.\u00a0\u201cThe camp focuses on teaching kids respect for themselves and others. This is <em>not<\/em> a boot camp, we are recruiting kids to a better way of life through bridging the gap between law enforcement and the communities we serve,\u201d PA State Police Community Service Officer, Tpr. Samantha Minnucci, \u201cWe do not want kids to be afraid of us\u2026we our jobs every day because we want children to be safe and because we care.\u201d<a href=\"http:\/\/managewp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/8659307_orig.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1173981\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/8659307_orig-300x89.png\" alt=\"8659307_orig\" width=\"297\" height=\"88\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To be eligible for Camp Cadet, children must be 11 and not yet 14 by the first day of camp and must live in, or go to school in Chester County.\u00a0 \u00a0Priority is given to youth who will\u00a0\u2018age out\u2019 of the program and campers represent towns from across the county. Cadet cabins are separated for boys and girls and staffed by law enforcement volunteers of the same sex.<\/p>\n<p>Minnucci says, \u201cKids get first-hand exposure to seeing our K9 units at work, dust for fingerprints, how to properly handle evidence and attend sessions on anti-drug and alcohol abuse\u2026Kids are also given CPR training and water safety lessons. This all happens in addition to traditional camp experiences like swimming and canoeing.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1173982\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/11891012_874702842566362_3520325043252046369_n-300x169.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1173982\" class=\"wp-image-1173982 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/11891012_874702842566362_3520325043252046369_n-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"11891012_874702842566362_3520325043252046369_n\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1173982\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Camp Cadets receive CPR and water safety training.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Motivation is also a big part of the camp\u2019s message; campers start their day off with physical training and activity and are challenged to do a little bit better than the day before.\u00a0 Minnucci enthusiastically reports, \u201cIt\u2019s amazing to see the Cadets progress by the end of the week!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The cost to send 120 youth to this camp is nearly $40,000 which includes lodging and uniforms.\u00a0 In April, the PA State Police &#8211; Avondale Barracks hosts its annual golf outing fundraiser. \u00a0Area sponsors from small and large companies, personal donors and members of the community come together to ensure that the camp&#8217;s legacy can continue and\u00a0meet its fundraising challenges.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1173983\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/11916104_875973205772659_6392242765381641245_n-225x300.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1173983\" class=\"wp-image-1173983 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/11916104_875973205772659_6392242765381641245_n-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"11916104_875973205772659_6392242765381641245_n\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1173983\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Camp Cadet also takes time for some traditional summer camp fun including swimming, canoeing and ice-cold treats.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Camp Cadets are held to high standards of personal responsibility and are required to attend a pre-camp orientation, during which, camp rules are reviewed. \u201cThe orientation helps get rid of the \u2018jitters\u2019 for our campers and we also discuss how fighting, bullying and foul language are not tolerated.
