The list is long and stretches across a wide variety of fields.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The small Quaker school also has another top-flight musician on its list of talented alumnae &#8212; Eliza Hardy Jones.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Jones, a West Chester native who graduated from Westtown School and Vassar College, has been a member of a number of Philadelphia\u2019s top bands. Currently, she sings and plays keyboards in Grace Potter\u2019s band and, at the same time, is pursuing a solo career.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The versatile singer-songwriter-musician has just finished making her debut solo album \u201cBecause Become.\u201d The CD will officially be released on January 15 but will also be available at her show on January 6 at Boot and Saddle (1131 South Broad Street, Philadelphia, 215-639-4528, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bootandsaddlephilly.com\/\"><span class=\"s2\">www.bootandsaddlephilly.com<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI grew up in a musical family,\u201d said Jones, during a phone interview last week from her home in West Philadelphia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe lived in Overbrook and then moved to West Chester because my dad is a professor at West Chester University. I played classical music in high school. I also studied classical music at Vassar where I was a major in Latin American Studies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI travelled to a lot of Latin American countries in Central and South America but there\u2019s no Latin influence in my music. I love Latin American music but it\u2019s not something that feels like me &#8212; like it comes from me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Jones\u2019 music has its own vibe &#8212; fresh, smart and totally original.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAfter I graduated, I moved to Philly and started making music,\u201d said Jones. \u201cI was in a band called Buried Beds for many years. I played in a few other bands and was a touring member of Strand of Oaks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When Jones decided to make her solo album, she called on her musical buddies from the Quaker City. The album was recorded and produced by Brian McTear, Nick Krill and David Hartley. The stellar group of musicians on the album included Jones on keyboard and guitar, Dave Hartley (Nightlands, The War On Drugs) on bass and guitar, Eric Slick (Dr. Dog) on drums, Patrick Berkery on drums, Brian McTear on guitar, and Nick Krill (Teen Men, Spinto Men) on guitar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt was important to know the musicians and what they would bring to the table &#8212; and to have musicians that I trusted,\u201d said Jones. \u201cI feel very lucky to have worked with these guys.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI recorded half of the album at Brian McTear\u2019s Miner Street Studio in Philly and half at Mount Slippery, which is Dr. Dog\u2019s studio in Upper Darby. I made the album over the course of the last year-and-a-half &#8212; in between tours.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Jones has been on the road a lot with Grace Potter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI finished the album when I was on tour with Grace Potter,\u201d said Jones. \u201cI played the album for Grace and she asked me to open for her on her last tour. I\u2019m also in her band. With Grace, I play keyboards and sing backup vocals. Even though Jones\u2019 music is quite different from Potter\u2019s high-energy sound, she still has been a hit with Potter\u2019s audiences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWhen people ask me what my music is like, I describe it as mystical pop music,\u201d said Jones. \u201cOne of my biggest influences is Kate Bush. But, I have a lot of influences &#8212; from Debussy to Joni Mitchell\u2026from Bowie to Pat Benatar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIn January, I\u2019m going out on another tour with Grace &#8212; opening with my band and then playing with hers. There is no Philly date on the tour. That\u2019s why I booked the show at Boot and Saddle. I haven\u2019t played the songs from the album live with a band yet. Tickets are $10.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Other shows at Boot and Saddle over the next week will feature NOTHING with Dark Blue and Problems on December 31, Drums Like Machine Guns with SPT, and Collar on January 1 and \u201cPhilly For Bernie Sanders Concert: Round 2!\u201d with Son Step, Tutlie, Tinmouth on January 5).<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1251204\" style=\"width: 268px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/david-bromberg-258x300.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1251204\" class=\"wp-image-1251204 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/david-bromberg-258x300.jpg\" alt=\"david bromberg\" width=\"258\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1251204\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">David Bromberg<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For fans of Americana music, the opportunity to spend New Year\u2019s Eve being entertained by David Bromberg is a real treat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Bromberg\u2019s fans can slide from 2015 into 2016 while being serenaded by the master singer-songwriter-guitarist when the World Caf\u00e9 Live at the Queen (500 North Market Street, Wilmington, 302- 994-1400,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.queen.worldcafelive.com\/\"><span class=\"s2\"><i>www.queen.worldcafelive.com<\/i><\/span><\/a>) presents \u201cNew Year\u2019s Eve with David Bromberg\u201d starting at 10 p.m. on December 31.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Many artists have gold albums but not many have albums approaching golden anniversaries. Bromberg is one of the few.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Bromberg released his first album \u201cDavid Bromberg\u201d in 1972 and has since performed and\/or recorded with a long list of top-flight musical acts including George Harrison,\u00a0Bob Dylan, the Eagles, Carly Simon, Willie Nelson, Jerry Garcia, the Beastie Boys and Jorma Kaukonen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">His debut album included \u201cThe Holdup,\u201d a song he co-wrote with the late, great George Harrison, and \u201cSammy\u2019s Song,\u201d which featured Bob Dylan on harmonica. His two most recent LPs are \u201cUse Me,\u201d which was released in 2011 and \u201cOnly Slightly Mad,\u201d which was released in 2013 by West Chester-based Appleseed Records.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cUse Me\u201d got its title from the all-star array of talent used in making the disc &#8212; including Vince Gill, Los Lobos, Levon Helm, John Hiatt, Dr. John, Keb\u2019 Mo\u2019, Widespread Panic and Linda Ronstadt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOnly Slightly Mad\u201d was recorded with producer\u00a0Larry Campbell\u00a0(three-time Grammy-winning producer for Levon Helm and multi-instrumentalist with Bob Dylan) and engineer Justin Guip\u00a0at Levon Helm Studios\u00a0in Woodstock, New York.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe \u2018Only Slightly Mad\u2019 album came out of my previous album \u2018Use Me,\u2019\u201d said Bromberg, during a phone interview from his violin shop in Wilmington where he is a luthier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0\u201cMaking \u2018Use Me\u2019 was an awful lot to ask. I was humbled by the players who agreed to do it. Larry Campbell produced those sessions. So, when it was time for another album, I contacted Larry and said I wanted to do a Chicago blues style album.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cHe said he wanted to do and old-style David Bromberg album \u2014 the kind that had everything and the kitchen sink. I had the tunes all ready. They were the things my band and I had been playing live. It was a switch from what I wanted to do with the new album which was a blues album. But, I wanted to record these songs sooner or later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI went in the studio with my band and the recording went pretty quickly \u2014 three weeks at the most. Then, we took about another week to mix the album. I was really pleased with how it turned out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Campbell and his wife Teresa Williams will be performing together in the area later in the month. The highly-talented duo will headline a show on January 21 at the Ardmore Music Hall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Even though Bromberg began making records more than 40 years ago, he has not been making music on a steady basis ever since.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI stopped playing in 1980,\u201d said Bromberg. \u201cI just simply got burned out. And, I had hand trouble for awhile &#8212; soft tissue problem in my left hand. But, it\u2019s all better now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Bromberg resumed his recording career in 2007 with the release of his \u201cTry Me One More Time\u201d album.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI was with my friends Chris Hillman and Herb Pedersen,\u201d said Bromberg. \u201cWe were doing a gig together in Texas. We got talking about how we got started in music and we began playing some songs by Reverend Gary Davis. Chris and Herb said to me \u2014 you should be doing it not maybe doing it. I went got in the studio after that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When he performs onstage, Bromberg employs a variety of band configurations &#8212; especially the David Bromberg Big Band and the David Bromberg Quintet. He also occasionally does gigs as a solo artist. I came back and re-formed an old band I was in before. They were here so it was easy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Sharkey grew up in Delaware County and his love\/hate relationship filters throughout Dark Blue\u2019s music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cMy wife is Australian so we decided to have our kids there,\u201d said Sharkey. \u201cBut, we also had a house in Delaware County. You always come back. I grew up in Darby Township and went to Academy Park High School.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cGrowing up in Delco was really bizarre. For 14 years, I didn\u2019t realize how depressing it was. Then, I realized how to get out and that I needed to get out. When the \u2018Berlin Wall\u2019 came down, I enjoyed my freedom. But, growing up in Delaware County did toughen me up for anything I\u2019ll encounter in life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Dark Blue\u2019s new single features two songs about blue collar depression in the changing Delco socio-economic landscape, The A-side is titled \u201cVicious Romance\u201d while the B-side is a song called \u201cDelco Runts,\u201d which is billed as \u201ca love (or hate) letter to Delaware County.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cSo far, we\u2019ve released three singles and one LP,\u201d said Sharkey. \u201cThe album (\u201cPure Reality\u201d) came out last year in October. The new single &#8212; \u2018Vicious Romance\/Delco Runts\u2019 &#8212; will be out on January 15 on the 12XU label.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWhen I came back from Australia, I wanted to have a band that incorporates late punk style with the post-punk style that I\u2019ve been playing with Puerto Rico Flowers and the Clockcleaners &#8212; and marry it to U.K. \u201982-style punk drums. Broad Street, Philadelphia, 215-336-3600, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wellsfargocenterphilly.com\/\"><span class=\"s2\"><i>http:\/\/www.wellsfargocenterphilly.com<\/i><\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The show, which has a huge cast and a lot of big production numbers, features many of Disney\u2019s most popular characters &#8212; all the way from Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck to the main cast members from \u201cFrozen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cDisney on Ice Celebrates 100 Years of Magic\u201d has 51 skaters in a show that features 14 stories.
