There is even a better chance that it\u2019s going to be hot inside the Ardmore Music Hall (23 East Lancaster Avenue, Ardmore, 610-649-8389,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ardmoremusic.com\/\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>www.ardmoremusic.com<\/b><\/span><\/a>) on Friday night &#8212; smoking hot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On January 22, the New Orleans Suspects will be making a return visit to the venue as part of the Ardmore Music Hall\u2019s \u201cMardi Gras &amp; Carnivale Series.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The New Orleans Suspects have only been in existence for slightly more than six years but they are so tight musically, it would be easy to assume that they\u2019ve been making music together for decades.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The band features\u00a0Reggie Scanlan\u00a0on bass (The Radiators,\u00a0Professor Longhair Band),\u00a0\u201cMean\u201d Willie Green\u00a0on drums (Neville Brothers), Jeff\u00a0Watkins\u00a0on saxophone (James Brown Band,\u00a0Joss Stone Band), Jake\u00a0Eckert\u00a0on guitar and vocals (Dirty Dozen Brass Band) and\u00a0CR Gruver\u00a0on keyboards and vocals (Polytoxic,\u00a0Outformation).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The band\u2019s formation was very accidental. Hank Staples, the guy who runs the Maple Leaf (a popular New Orleans music club) occasionally had a band that doesn\u2019t show up. So, he kept a list of New Orleans musicians who he could call at the last minute.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe all live right around the Maple Leaf,\u201d said Eckert, during a phone interview last week from his home in New Orleans. \u201cI was in the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Willie was with the Nevilles and the Radiators were still in existence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cHank would call me whenever he needed a band at the last minute. We played a couple gigs together and people really enjoyed it. A few weeks later, Hank called again. Another few weeks later, he called again and said &#8212; can you put the usual suspects together to come play?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The band began performing a couple times a month at the Maple Leaf and started hanging out at Eckert\u2019s place while he was building his studio. Before long, they were developing their own sound.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It was a traditional sound within the realm of New Orleans funk \u2014 music like the early Meters, Earl King, Mardi Gras music, Professor Longhair, Dr. John and early Neville Brothers. Eckert also brought along a background in southern rock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAs time went on, we started recording our first album &#8212; first as a demo and then it turned into a real album,\u201d said Eckert. \u201cThat\u2019s when we changed our name to the New Orleans Suspects. Then, we started hitting the road.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe next crossroad was when we picked up Jeff\u00a0Watkins. He\u2019s a great saxophone player as well as an amazing engineer. He was the missing link.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Watkins and Eckert produced and engineered the band\u2019s latest album \u201cOuroboros.\u201d They also did the mastering at Eckert\u2019s studio, which won a Grammy two years ago for its work with the North African band Tinariwen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">According to the band\u2019s press release &#8211;\u201cOuroboros,\u201d the band\u2019s third album, features fever-inducing funk, irresistible R&amp;B rhythms, Longhair rhumbas, dancing-in-the-street second lines, jazzy soul-drenched horns, mind-melting swamp hoodoo, and feet-don\u2019t-fail-me-now Carnivale music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe\u2019re working on our new album now,\u201d said Eckert. \u201cThe last one and this one are all originals. There is zydeco, straight-up New Orleans funk, Southern rock, Second Line tunes, a Mardi Gras Indian song and a song we made with Paul Barrere and Fred Tackett of Little Feat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe music has changed. At first, it was all these different styles come together. Now, it has its own sound. It\u2019s a strange gumbo but the sum of the parts is really good.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Mardi Gras vibe at the Ardmore Music Hall Friday night will extend beyond the music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe kitchen is doing a special New Orleans menu,\u201d said the band\u2019s manager Barney Kilpatrick. \u201cThere will be dishes in honor of the band\u2019s drummer Mean Willie Green, who is also a very good chef. We\u2019re encouraging people to come dressed for a Mardi Gras celebration. We will also be doing face-painting and handing out masks and beads.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The New Orleans Suspects are also doing their Mardi Gras celebrations in New York City and Washington, D.C.\u00a0 Fortunately for Eckert and his band mates, they will be back in New Orleans in time for Mardi Gras.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI love Mardi Gras,\u201d said Eckert. \u201cI\u2019ve got a six-year-old and it\u2019s great for kids. What you see on TV with girls flashing their breasts on Bourbon Street and what actually happens are very different. Bourbon Street is for tourists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cUptown, where all the bands are from, it\u2019s a family thing with colors, costumes and cotton candy. We\u2019ll probably go to 10-12 parades. We\u2019ll be playing at the Maple Leaf for Lundi Gras (February 8, the Monday before Mardi Gras). The husband-and-wife team is touring in support of its recent eponymous album release on Red House Records.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Campbell\u00a0won a Grammy Award for his work with Levon Helm and has\u00a0played with many of the era\u2019s greats including Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Phil Lesh, Emmylou Harris, Sheryl Crow, Keith Richards, Cyndi Lauper, Hot Tuna and Mavis Staples. He has also won the Lifetime Achievement Award (2008) and Instrumentalist of the Year Award (2013) from the Americana Music Association.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Williams was a member of Southern Comfort, and later Swing Fever. She created the role of Sara Carter, the lead singer of The Original Carter Family, for the stage and for the BBC and PBS. She has performed with Bonnie Bramlett, Buddy Miller, Emmylou Harris, Little Feat and Hot Tuna and has toured as a member of Phil Lesh and Friends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Together, they are one of the premier musical couples in American rock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Campbell and Williams, along with Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi (Tedeschi Trucks Band), sit at the top of the list of talented married couples making modern American music. Like Trucks and Tedeschi, the two had been married a long time prior to actually performing together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe\u2019ve been married for 27 blissful years,\u201d said Campbell, during a recent phone interview. \u201cSurprisingly, this is the first album we\u2019ve done together. The first time we really worked together professionally was with Levon (Helm).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Williams said, \u201cPrior to this, the husband-and-wife thing \u2014 recording together \u2014 just turned me off\u2026except for George (Jones) and Tammy (Wynette). Playing as Larry and Teresa is new.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The duo, which performed at the Philadelphia Folk Festival last summer, is still touring in support of its latest disc &#8212; an album that mines the rich tradition of Southern roots music and is a satisfying blend of blues, gospel, country, folk and Americana.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe had been working on it sporadically over the course of five years ,\u201d said Campbell. \u201cWe did the rhythm tracks with Levon during the recording for \u2018Dirt\u2019 (Helm\u2019s 2007 album \u201cDirt Farmer\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOne of the tracks that survived was \u2018You\u2019re Running Wild\u2019 with Levon on drums. We were so busy with so many other things we didn\u2019t have much time to work on it. We\u2019d get our creative flow going and then it would be time to do some other thing \u2014 like tour with Phil Lesh.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe started working on our album at Levon\u2019s studio with Justin Guip as the engineer. He\u2019s the engineer I use when I\u2019m producing other people\u2019s records. Eight of the songs on the album are originals. \u2018You\u2019re Running Wild,\u2019 \u2018Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and Burning\u2019 and \u2018Attics Of My Life\u2019 are the only cover tunes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Campbell and Williams spent the latter part of 2015 touring with Jackson Browne.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe had a great tour with Jackson,\u201d said Williams. \u201cHe was just such a cool person &#8212; always considerate. We would do a 40-minute set playing our music and then were part of his band for his show.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Campbell said, \u201cJackson made sure we had enough time to do our set with his band backing us. We had to learn a lot of songs for that tour. I\u2019m still learning the songs. After that, we did some shows on the West Coast with Emmy Lou (Harris) and Rodney (Crowell).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Williams said, \u201cAfter the tour finished, I hightailed it to my parents\u2019 place in Tennessee. Larry and I have an apartment in Manhattan, a house in Woodstock and my family\u2019s house in Tennessee.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Campbell, meanwhile, stayed busy with music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI also started producing a record for some Pennsylvania kids &#8212; a band from Lancaster called the Stray Birds,\u201d said Campbell. \u201cWe recorded it with Justin Guip at his studio in Woodstock. After that, I went to Tennessee to be with Teresa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cNow, we\u2019re back in New York. Last night, we sang the National Anthem at a New York Rangers game. We\u2019ve started to think about making the next album. They have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PxKwCDib9bA\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>performed on the Late Show with David Letterman<\/b><\/span><\/a>, twice joined Grammy and Oscar winner Ryan Bingham on national tours, and played the first dance at Reese Witherspoon\u2019s wedding. They have backed up Nick Cave, Tim Robbins, and Lucinda Williams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The four-piece band &#8212; Patrick Ferris (vocals, guitar),\u00a0 Zac Sokolow (guitar, banjo), Jake Faulkner (bass), Tim Carr (drums) &#8212; appears throughout \u201cAmerican Epic,\u201d a four-hour primetime PBS\/BBC special produced by Jack White, Robert Redford, and T Bone Burnett that features Nas, Elton John, Alabama Shakes, and Willie .<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe started the band about six years ago,\u201d said Ferris, during a recent phone interview from his home in Southern California. \u201cThree of us had known each other for a long time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe met through a shared interest in pre-war traditional American music &#8212; rural music from the 1920s and 1930s. We were teenagers. Two of us grew up in L.A. and two in San Francisco. We\u2019re all living in the L.A. area now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cJake lived in L.A. and I lived in San Francisco. His parents were friends with my parents and we\u2019d have family get-togethers. Jake and I found that we both liked music and we both were learning to play guitar. I moved to L.A. in 2010 to start the band. It was to be a contemporary rock band where everyone in the band could play old-time music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe started with rockabilly music &#8212; hillbilly music. Eventually, we started playing songs I was writing. The idea wasn\u2019t about modernizing old music. It has moved away from the old traditional music. That genre still informs our original music &#8212; but, we\u2019re just a rock band.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">After making a few EPs and contributing songs to compilations, the Americans are ready to release their debut studio album \u201cI\u2019ll Be Yours\u201d this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe album has been a long time in the making,\u201d said Ferris. \u201cJust this last summer, we were writing and doing pre-production at the same time. We produced it ourselves with Matt Wright as our engineer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt all went pretty much according to plan. Some of the songs were road-tested and some were written right before we got into the studio. We recorded it at Prairie Sun Studio, which is located on a chicken ranch in Sonoma County (CA). \u201c<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Americans also recorded an original song for Hal Willner\u2019s \u201cSon of Rogue\u2019s Gallery\u201d (ANTI- Records), an album of sea shanties and pirate songs featuring Tom Waits, Keith Richards, and Iggy Pop, executive produced by Johnny Depp.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe auditioned a song for the project and the producers liked it,\u201d said Ferris. \u201cOur song \u2018Sweet and Low\u2019 was the one they picked to use on the album.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s3\">Video link for The Americans &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?feature=player_embedded&amp;v=tWWCTrfovGA\"><span class=\"s4\"><b>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?feature=player_embedded&amp;v=tWWCTrfovGA<\/b><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The show at Bourbon and Branch, which starts at 8 p.m., will have Mother Moses and Christian Lee Hutson as the opening acts. Tickets are $10.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Another concert in Philly on January 21 will feature a band that does not play traditional music and is not American. MilkBoy Philly (1100 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, 215- 925-6455, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.milkboyphilly.com\/\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>www.milkboyphilly.com<\/b><\/span><\/a>) will host a show with The Trews as the headline act.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1264582\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/trews-300x300.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1264582\" class=\"wp-image-1264582 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/trews-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"trews\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1264582\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Trews<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Trews &#8212; vocalist Colin MacDonald, guitarist John-Angus MacDonald, bassist Jack Syperek, and drummer Gavin Maguire &#8212; are a Canadian hard rock band from Antigonish, Nova Scotia. The band is currently based in Ontario.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cSome of us are living now in Toronto and others are in Hamilton, Ontario,\u201d said Colin MacDonald, during a recent phone interview from his home in Toronto. \u201cWe got started in Antigonish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOur bass player\u2019s dad owned bars in Halifax, so we played there a lot. We began by playing cover songs when we were in Nova Scotia. Then, we moved to Toronto, started writing our own songs and got our first record contract in 2003.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Trews released their debut album \u201cHouse of Ill Fame\u201d in 2003 followed by \u201cDen of Thieves\u201d (2005), \u201cNo Time for Later\u201d (2008), \u201cThe Trews Acoustic\u201d (2009), \u201cHope &amp; Ruin\u201d (2011), \u201cThank You and I\u2019m Sorry\u201d (2012) and \u201cThe Trews\u201d (2014).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For more than a decade, the Trews have been moderately popular in America and very popular north of the border. They have had a lot of success in their native Canada with 16 Top 10 singles. \u201cNot Ready to Go,\u201d \u201cYearning\u201d and \u201cHold Me in Your Arms\u201d were all chart-toppers with \u201cYearning\u201d and \u201cHold Me in Your Arms\u201d both reaching gold record status.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201c\u2018House of Ill Fame\u2019 was our first album and we had a couple big singles from it,\u201d said MacDonald. \u201cIt was a whirlwind from there on. We got into that cycle of make a record, go on tour, make another record and do another tour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOur last album was \u2018The Trews.\u2019 We toured a lot behind that. And, we\u2019re still playing a lot of songs from that album on our upcoming American tour. There is a pretty significant difference between our popularity in the states and Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIn 2015, we just did a handful of gigs. We did some writing but mostly the guys all just lived their lives &#8212; families and children and things like that. We have a \u2018Greatest Hits\u2019 album coming out soon in Canada and we recorded four new songs for that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe\u2019re hoping to have a new album done by the end of this year. Right now, most of our writing has been very acoustic-based. If I had my way, I\u2019d like to make an album every month.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But, the band is not as prolific as MacDonald.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cEarly on, the writing was mostly done by me,\u201d said MacDonald. \u201cNow, it\u2019s more collaborative. I also co-wrote with Gordy Johnson (from bands Big Sugar and Grady) and Simon Wilcox (a multi-platinum Canadian singer-songwriter). We co-wrote the lyrics but all the musical ideas come from us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe stopped road-testing songs for awhile but we\u2019re now doing it again. It\u2019s important for bands to see how songs translate onstage. We will be road-testing all the new songs. We love touring in America. He\u2019s the \u201cBoss with the Hot Sauce\u201d \u2013 Philadelphia\u2019s legendary disc jockey Jerry Blavat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Blavat has been associated with the oldies since back when he first got on the radio in the early 1960s. He has been a host of record hops, dance parties and oldies extravaganzas ever since. Blavat, who will turn 76 in July, has been a radio and television personality for as long as anyone can remember.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The champion of oldies music has taken the genre to its highest level with a series of concerts at the prestigious Kimmel Center (Broad and Spruce streets, Philadelphia, 215-731-3333, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kimmelcenter.org\/\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>www.kimmelcenter.org<\/b><\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It continues this weekend with a special show Saturday night &#8212; \u201cS<b>alute to Street Corner Harmony<\/b>!\u201d The concert features a variety of recording artists who had hits in the late 1950s and early 1960s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The lineup for Saturday\u2019s show features New York City legends like <b>The Demensions<\/b>, <b>The Dubs, Eugene Pitt <\/b>and <b>The Jive Five, The Solitaires, <\/b>and 2010 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame honoree <b>The Chantels. The roster also includes <\/b>local favorites <b>Billy and the Essentials<\/b> and <b>Frankie and the Fashions and <\/b>Pittsburgh legends,<b> The Skyliners <\/b>and<b> The Marcels.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI\u2019m blessed to be able to do what I do,\u201d said Blavat, during a recent phone interview. \u201cI started doing these shows at the Kimmel several years ago. This is my 31<\/span><span class=\"s6\"><sup>st<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> show at the Kimmel. The first show I did there had Little Anthony and the Imperials, Lloyd Price and The Chantels. It sold out immediately.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Blavat knows that fans love the oldies \u2013 and the artists that recorded the hits originally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">There will be plenty of hits served up on the Kimmel stage this Saturday including \u201c&#8217;Walking Along,\u201d \u201cSince I Don\u2019t Have You,\u201d \u201cMy True Story\u201d and \u201cBlue Moon.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWhen you go back 40 years, artists like these would play in theaters or at dance shows with minimal music backup,\u201d said Blavat. \u201cWith my shows, they\u2019re in a concert hall backed up by a 30-piece orchestra.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">With a lot of oldies shows, the acts onstage bear only a slight resemblance personnel-wise to the artists that originally made the music. Such is not the case with the acts that Blavat brings to his shows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI only use artists that are still intact,\u201d said Blavat. \u201cThey have to be the original artists \u2013 and they have to still sound like the original recordings. It takes a long time to put a show together because I plan on artists that audiences in our area haven\u2019t seen in awhile.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI pick the songs for the groups that can emulate the original recording &#8212; with the lead singer and the arrangement. When audiences come to the show, they can close their eyes and hear what they heard on the record.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Jerry Blavat\u2019s \u201cS<b>alute to Street Corner Harmony<\/b>!\u201d will start at 8 p.m. on January 23. On Wednesday night, the Way Down Wanderers will be making their Philly debut with a show at the World Caf\u00e9 Live (3025 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, 215-222-1400, <a href=\"http:\/\/philly.worldcafelive.com\/\"><span class=\"s2\">philly.worldcafelive.com<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Chicago-based alt-folk\/Americana act is a five-piece group, headlined by Austin Thompson and 18-year old Collin Krause. The talented musicians, who started touring together at the young ages of 14 and 17, display an impressive brand of youthful energy and enthusiasm.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cInitially, we were in different bands in our hometown,\u201d said Thompson, during a phone interview last week from a tour stop in the Florida Keys. \u201cWe met in the music scene in Peoria, Illinois. Then, we had a couple bands together. There is a pretty good music scene in Peoria. A year ago, they received Deli Magazine\u2019s Readers Choice award as \u201cChicago\u2019s Best Emerging Artist, 2014.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cCollin and I have been the core of the band ever since the start,\u201d said Thompson. \u201cWhen Collin and I were together at Illinois Central College, he opened up bluegrass and Americana for me &#8212; the singer\/songwriter style of music. The songs we were writing just had that sound.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAt the beginning, we also had a cellist and an electric guitarist. But, we found it wasn\u2019t good for the sound we were looking for &#8212; more of a folkish Americana sound than a really loud rock sound. We have the same idea now but we\u2019ve opened up more to rock. We also have more grooves than just bluegrass rhythms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe\u2019re a five-piece band right now,\u201d said Thompson. \u201cHopefully we\u2019ve gotten the right line-up &#8212; one that will stick. We released our EP \u2018Wellspring\u2019 in April 2015. In late February, we\u2019ll be recording our first full-length at Sonic Ranch in El Paso, Texas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cRight now, we\u2019re focusing on this tour. We\u2019re getting the chance to play a lot of cities we\u2019ve never played before.
