{"id":18429,"date":"2016-02-08T09:49:20","date_gmt":"2016-02-08T14:49:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=18429"},"modified":"2016-02-08T09:49:20","modified_gmt":"2016-02-08T14:49:20","slug":"butler-honored-for-work-with-youth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/?p=18429","title":{"rendered":"Butler honored for work with youth"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_1280071\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image012-300x225.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1280071\" class=\"wp-image-1280071 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/kennetttimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image012-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"image012\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1280071\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kia Butler (middle) standing with her parents following being presented with the award at West Chester University last month.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">WEST CHESTER \u2014<i> \u201c<\/i>Change begins with us,\u201d Kia Butler said after receiving the 2016 Drum Major for the Justice Award at the Martin Luther King Celebration brunch at West Chester University\u2019s Sykes Student Union on Thursday, January 21, 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Drum Major for the Justice Award is a prestigious honor that is awarded to individuals who follow in the footsteps of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., by dedicating their life\u2019s work to social justice issues.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Tiffany Lane, the President of the Frederick Douglas Society Members and Assistant Professor of Social Work at West Chester University explained, \u201cWest Chester University Drum Major\u2019s for Justice are West Chester University Alumni who, through their personal and or professional efforts have exemplified themselves as pillars of the community. They are men and women who are role models, leaders in their field and actively involved in improving the world around them. The Frederick Douglass Society Committee voted and selected Ms. Butler out of three nominees.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As a person who has always been very passionate about helping children, Kia Butler earned a Bachelor\u2019s degree in Sociology from West Chester University. While in school, she volunteered at West Chester\u2019s Kindred House for homeless families.\u00a0 As a member, she was also deeply involved in community service projects with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.\u00a0 In 2010, Ms. Butler received her Master\u2019s degree in Education from the University of Phoenix.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Ms. Butler began her career at Progressions, a behavioral health agency, working with children between the ages of 5 and 15.\u00a0 Her commitment to children led her to Northern Children\u2019s Services in 2003, where she worked as a school-based case manager.\u00a0 In 2008, Kia became the Director of Community-Based programs, where she managed programs that served children and youth throughout the Philadelphia and surrounding counties, including truancy prevention, community change initiative, juvenile justice prevention and the After School Beacon program. Currently, Ms. Butler is the Director of Foster Care at Northern Children\u2019s Services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Her enthusiasm and drive has kept her focused on the needs of children, who are too often overlooked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIf you change the life of one child, you have changed the world,\u201d Ms. Butler.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Her dedication and love for her job is a great testament to that statement.
