People\u2019s Light\u2019s production <\/span>of<span class=\"s1\"> <i>Richard III <\/i><\/span>is<span class=\"s1\"> part <\/span>of<span class=\"s1\"> Shakespeare <\/span>in<span class=\"s1\"> American Communities, <\/span>a<span class=\"s1\"> program <\/span>of the<span class=\"s1\"> National Endowment <\/span>for<span class=\"s1\"> the<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">Arts <\/span>in<span class=\"s1\"> partnership <\/span>with<span class=\"s1\"> Arts Midwest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Director Samantha Reading and acclaimed actor Pete Pryor pull <\/span>you<span class=\"s1\"> inside <\/span>the<span class=\"s1\"> head <\/span>of the<span class=\"s1\"> charismatic master manipulator <\/span>as<span class=\"s1\"> he <\/span>tricks,<span class=\"s1\"> seduces, and murders his <\/span>way to the<span class=\"s1\"> throne <\/span>of<span class=\"s1\"> England. Frightened refugees flee for safety,\u201d she observes. \u201cIt\u2019s <\/span>a<span class=\"s1\"> harsh, dangerous time: resources are stripped bare, buildings crumble, land decays. Violence and murder seem ordinary, and death <\/span>is<span class=\"s1\"> ubiquitous. This <\/span>is the world we live in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThis is also<span class=\"s1\"> the world <\/span>of<span class=\"s1\"> <i>Richard III<\/i>,\u201d Reading notes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Reading points <\/span>out that<span class=\"s1\"> Richard<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><span class=\"s1\">implicates his<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><span class=\"s1\">audience <\/span>in<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><span class=\"s1\">everything<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><span class=\"s1\">he <\/span>does,<span class=\"s1\"> including<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><span class=\"s1\">his<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><span class=\"s1\">most gruesome and<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">pitiless actions. <\/span>\u201cHe<span class=\"s1\"> thrills <\/span>our<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><span class=\"s1\">minds, <\/span>shocks our<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><span class=\"s1\">spirits and<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><span class=\"s1\">commands <\/span>our<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><span class=\"s1\">hearts because there\u2019s <\/span>a<span class=\"s1\"> part <\/span>of all of<span class=\"s1\"> us that <\/span>can<span class=\"s1\"> relate to him,\u201d she asserts. \u201cHaven\u2019t you ever <\/span>wished<span class=\"s1\"> you <\/span>could<span class=\"s1\"> change your<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">reality? Haven\u2019t you<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><span class=\"s1\">ever asked <\/span>yourself<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>what<span class=\"s1\"> you<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>could<span class=\"s1\"> accomplish<\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><span class=\"s1\">without <\/span>a<span class=\"s1\"> conscience?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe can<span class=\"s1\"> live<\/span> out <span class=\"s1\">those fantasies<\/span> with<span class=\"s1\"> Richard because<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">he<\/span> does what we, in <span class=\"s1\">our<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">darkest moments, dream <\/span>of <span class=\"s1\">doing,\u201d Reading <\/span>says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">Pete Pryor, Associate Artistic Director and People\u2019s Light resident artist, leads the <\/span>cast as<span class=\"s1\"> Richard, the twisted Duke <\/span>of<span class=\"s1\"> Gloucester. The eight remaining ensemble members play multiple <\/span>roles.<span class=\"s1\"> Company <\/span>actors<span class=\"s1\"> include Alda Cortese <\/span>as<span class=\"s1\"> Margaret, Peter DeLaurier <\/span>as<span class=\"s1\"> Hastings, Christopher Patrick Mullen as Buckingham, Stephen Novelli <\/span>as<span class=\"s1\"> Stanley, and <\/span>Mary<span class=\"s1\"> Elizabeth Scallen <\/span>as<span class=\"s1\"> Elizabeth. Guest <\/span>artist<span class=\"s1\"> Margaret Ivey, <\/span>last<span class=\"s1\"> seen <\/span>in<span class=\"s1\"> Malvern <\/span>as<span class=\"s1\"> Ann Deever <\/span>in<span class=\"s1\"> <i>All <\/i><\/span><i>My<\/i><span class=\"s1\"><i> Sons<\/i>, returns to play Lady Anne. First-time guest Christopher <\/span>R.<span class=\"s1\"> Brown appears <\/span>as<span class=\"s1\"> York. Carl Clemons-Hopkins makes his People\u2019s Light debut <\/span>as<span class=\"s1\"> Richmond.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Resident artist Samantha Reading <i>(Pride <\/i><\/span><i>&amp;<\/i><span class=\"s1\"><i> Prejudice, Biloxi Blues) <\/i>directs <\/span>the<span class=\"s1\"> production. Returning guest Jorge Cousineau designs <\/span>both<span class=\"s1\"> set and sound. Newcomer Maria Shaplin serves <\/span>as<span class=\"s1\"> lighting designer, while company member Rosemarie McKelvey creates costumes. Resident Dramaturg Gina<\/span> <span class=\"s1\"> Pisasale shares dramaturgy duties <\/span>with<span class=\"s1\"> guest Geoff Proehl.
