People\u2019s Light\u2019s production <\/span>of Richard III <\/i><\/span>is part <\/span>of Shakespeare <\/span>in American Communities, <\/span>a program <\/span>of the National Endowment <\/span>for the<\/span> Arts <\/span>in partnership <\/span>with Arts Midwest.<\/span><\/p>\n

Director Samantha Reading and acclaimed actor Pete Pryor pull <\/span>you inside <\/span>the head <\/span>of the charismatic master manipulator <\/span>as he <\/span>tricks, seduces, and murders his <\/span>way to the throne <\/span>of England. Take <\/span>the exhilarating ride from underling <\/span>to king <\/span>with the most beguiling madman ever made, staged <\/span>with 9 actors in the intimate<\/span> Steinbright<\/span> Theatre.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis story <\/span>is immediate and relevant,\u201d <\/span>says director Samantha Reading. \u201cRight <\/span>now, if you turn on the news, what do you see? Politicians manipulate <\/span>the public <\/span>to gain power. One dictator replaces another. Frightened refugees flee for safety,\u201d she observes. \u201cIt\u2019s <\/span>a harsh, dangerous time: resources are stripped bare, buildings crumble, land decays. Violence and murder seem ordinary, and death <\/span>is ubiquitous. This <\/span>is the world we live in.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is also the world <\/span>of Richard III<\/i>,\u201d Reading notes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Reading points <\/span>out that Richard<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>implicates his<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>audience <\/span>in\u00a0 <\/span>everything<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>he <\/span>does, including<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>his<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>most gruesome and<\/span> pitiless actions. <\/span>\u201cHe thrills <\/span>our\u00a0 <\/span>minds, <\/span>shocks our\u00a0 <\/span>spirits and<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>commands <\/span>our\u00a0 <\/span>hearts because there\u2019s <\/span>a part <\/span>of all of us that <\/span>can relate to him,\u201d she asserts. \u201cHaven\u2019t you ever <\/span>wished you <\/span>could change your<\/span> reality? Haven\u2019t you<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>ever asked <\/span>yourself\u00a0 <\/span>what you<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>could accomplish<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>without <\/span>a conscience?<\/span><\/p>\n

Pete Pryor, Associate Artistic Director and People\u2019s Light resident artist, leads the <\/span>cast as Richard, the twisted Duke <\/span>of Gloucester. The eight remaining ensemble members play multiple <\/span>roles. Company <\/span>actors include Alda Cortese <\/span>as Margaret, Peter DeLaurier <\/span>as Hastings, Christopher Patrick Mullen as Buckingham, Stephen Novelli <\/span>as Stanley, and <\/span>Mary Elizabeth Scallen <\/span>as Elizabeth. Guest <\/span>artist Margaret Ivey, <\/span>last seen <\/span>in Malvern <\/span>as Ann Deever <\/span>in All <\/i><\/span>My<\/i> Sons<\/i>, returns to play Lady Anne. First-time guest Christopher <\/span>R. Brown appears <\/span>as York. Carl Clemons-Hopkins makes his People\u2019s Light debut <\/span>as Richmond.<\/span><\/p>\n

Resident artist Samantha Reading (Pride <\/i><\/span>&<\/i> Prejudice, Biloxi Blues) <\/i>directs <\/span>the production. Returning guest Jorge Cousineau designs <\/span>both set and sound. Newcomer Maria Shaplin serves <\/span>as lighting designer, while company member Rosemarie McKelvey creates costumes. Resident Dramaturg Gina<\/span> Pisasale shares dramaturgy duties <\/span>with guest Geoff Proehl.
