Coordinated by Assistant Principal Ray Fernandez, the day included opening remarks by Superintendent Barry Tomasetti followed by KHS student Alin Hernandez\u2019s introduction of keynote speaker Pedro Cort\u00e9s, the Secretary of State of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>A variety of morning and afternoon workshops and presentations focused on topics of interest to adult and young participants alike. Morning presenters included Mrs. Elizabeth Ely (KHS teacher) whose topic was \u201cDefining Diversity;\u201d Mr. Joseph \u201cJo-Jo\u201d Herndon (GlaxcoSmithKline, Regional Director, Health Systems and Hospitals) who concentrated on \u201cLeading Real Social Change;\u201d Mr. Michael Blanche (licensed clinical social worker, Caron Treatment Centers) speaking on \u201cD&amp;A Use\/Addiction in Today\u2019s Adolescent Population;\u201d Ms. Lynn Monahan (Assistant Professor, Dept. of Nutrition, College of Health Sciences, WCU) who talked about \u201cDiversity Representation in the Health Science Field;\u201d and Ms. Korri Brown (KHS teacher) who discussed \u201cAfter Graduation! What\u2019s The Next Step?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following an ethnic lunch consisting of food from various cultures, students attended a special presentation entitled \u201cWhat Is Your Y \u2013 Purpose in Life?\u201d delivered by Mr. Ray Fernandez, Kennett High School Assistant Principal and KHS-MDAC conference coordinator.<\/p>\n<p>Workshops offered in the afternoon included \u201cThe Art of Dancing to Promote Diversity &amp; Empowerment!\u201d by Ms. Tania Ramos (Esperanza Academy Instructor and Dance Team Coordinator); \u201cRebels for Diversity!\u201d hosted by Ms. Ann Atkins (author); \u201cAcculturation Stress in Immigrant Families\u201d by Jari Santana-Wynn (Outpatient Services Coordinator, Holcomb Behavioral Health Services); \u201cDiversity Lives Matter: Meaningful Diversity and Beyond\u201d by Dr. Richard Cooper (Professor, Social Work Dept., Widener University); and \u201cGood is the ENEMY of GREAT!\u201d by Ms. Chanel August (KHS teacher).<\/p>\n<p>The event culminated in a talent show competition with entries from schools participating in the conference.<\/p>\n<p>Approximately two hundred people attended the conference this year, including students from the following schools: Central York High School, William Allen High School, Reading High School, Esperanza Academy, Norristown High School, Conestoga High School, Upper Darby High School, Coatesville Area Senior High School, Avon Grove High School, Church Farm School, Milton Hershey School, and Quakertown High School.<\/p>\n<p>District officials say they and the greater school community remain\u00a0committed to \u201cunderstanding our cultural differences to discover our cultural similarities.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>KENNETT SQUARE \u2014 Kennett High School hosted its 15th Annual Multicultural &amp; Diversity Awareness Conference on Saturday, April 23.
